Firm canvasses smart classroom technology for education - The Punch

A typical smart classroom.

An indigenous Information Technology firm, Teledom Group, has introduced the smart classroom technology in Nigeria and desires a situation whereby it will be deployed nationwide to automate learning and teaching in the country.

Demonstrating the technology in Lagos, on Monday, the Chairman, Teledom Group, Dr. Emmanuel Ekuwem, said technology had become an essential tool in the process of acquiring knowledge and skills, adding that IT held great potential for the country?s educational sector.

He said that technology as a tool would aid training at the primary, secondary, tertiary and professional levels of education.

He also lamented that despite the semblance of ubiquitous technology globally, many nations especially developing ones like Nigeria have continued to grapple with how to make the best use of IT for educational development.

The Teledom boss, however, said the smart classroom technology would enhance the classroom while boosting the quality of teaching and learning in Nigeria, if adopted.

He said, ?The use of technology in teaching and learning is one of the most important assets for education today. It is time to move beyond the walls of our conventional classrooms and embrace technological innovations to revitalise education and automate learning processes.

?A smart classroom will change the way teachers teach, impact the quality of their lectures in the classroom and will definitely alter the way students learn by enabling them to use numerous modes, techniques, tools and styles for learning.?

Ekuwem explained that the technology would leverage learning technology such as computers, specialised software, audience response technology, videoconferencing platform, digital podium, networking, interactive smart board, multimedia projector, LCD TV, DVD player/recorder, USB duplicator, and SATA storage device, among others.

A System Integrator with Teledom, Mr. Emmanuel Orji, who listed the benefits of the smart classroom technology, said, ?The system allows the teacher to produce and modify resources quickly and easily, offer real time access to Internet based information and resources, allow access to a wide range of information in different formats, amongst others.?
