(AP) ? Baseball's all-time home run king and the most decorated pitcher likely will be shut out of the Hall of Fame in January. A survey by The Associated Press shows that Barry Bonds and Roger Clemens, as well as slugger Sammy Sosa, don't have enough votes to get into Cooperstown.

With steroid scandals still very much on the minds of longtime members of the Baseball Writers' Association of America as they cast their ballots, the trio failed to muster even 50 percent support among the 112 voters contacted by the AP ? nearly one-fifth of those eligible to choose.

Candidates need 75 percent for election

So Bonds, the only seven-time MVP, and Clemens, the only seven-time Cy Young Award winner, are likely to remain outside the Hall along with career hits leader Pete Rose, who was banned for betting on baseball as manager of the Cincinnati Reds.

"I'm not going to vote for anybody who has been tainted or associated with steroids," said MLB.com's Hal Bodley, the former baseball columnist for USA Today. "I'm just not going to do it. I might change down the road, but I just love the game too much. I have too much passion for the game and for what these people did to it."

The current ballot was announced this week and Bonds, Clemens and Sosa were on it for the first time. Votes will be cast throughout the month and results will be released Jan. 9.

Among voters who expressed an opinion, Bonds received 45 percent support, Clemens 43 percent and Sosa 18 percent. To gain election, Bonds and Clemens would need more than 80 percent support among the voters not surveyed and Sosa would need to get more than 85 percent.

"No one would dare say that Bonds, a seven-time National League MVP with 762 home runs, isn't a Hall of Famer," Thom Loverro, a columnist for The Washington Examiner, wrote in a column that explained his decision. "Nor would anyone say that Clemens, with 354 career victories, 4,672 strikeouts and seven Cy Young Awards, shouldn't be enshrined in Cooperstown. The same goes for Sosa, who finished with 609 career home runs, including 243 of them from 1998 through 2001.

"Except they cheated ? all of them. And this Hall of Fame is not just about numbers. Three of the six criteria for election to Cooperstown are sportsmanship, integrity and character. Bonds, Sosa and Clemens fail on all three counts."

The Denver Post's Troy Renck doesn't plan to vote for them, either.

"I understand that everyone has their opinion on this issue and I respect those," he said in a telephone interview. "For me personally, having coached kids for the last decade and talked to them about doing things a certain way, I would feel very uncomfortable voting for anyone that is a known cheater."

San Francisco Chronicle columnist Bruce Jenkins took the opposite view.

"The Hall of Fame's 'character' clause should be stricken immediately, because it's far too late to turn Cooperstown into a church," he wrote in an email. "Whether it was gambling (rampant in the early 20th century), scuffing the baseballs, corking bats, amphetamines or steroids, players have been cheating like crazy forever. It's an integral, if unsavory, part of the culture. I've always had the same criteria: which players were the best performers of their particular era ? so absolutely, I'll vote for Bonds, Clemens and Sosa."

Bonds and Clemens gained far more support than Sosa in the survey.

"I will definitely vote for Bonds and Clemens. I still need to consider Sosa's resume," ESPN.com's Jim Caple said. "Steroid use has nothing to do with my vote. Steroids were not banned during the majority of their careers when they achieved the vast majority of their accomplishments. All we can go by is what they did on the field. If Gaylord Perry is in the Hall for violating a rule that was in place 40 years before his career began, how can you justify withholding a vote from someone for a rule that wasn't in effect? (And personally, I would rather face a pitcher on PEDs than a spitballer)."

Hall voters are BBWAA members who have been with the organization for 10 consecutive years at any point. The BBWAA does not release the full list.

About 8-10 percent of the approximately 600 Hall of Fame voters are employees of the AP or freelance writers who work for the AP, the BBWAA said.

The AP contacted known voters by telephone and email from Wednesday to Friday. They were asked only how they would vote on Bonds, Clemens and Sosa: yes, no or unsure. About half asked not to be identified, and only those who agreed to be identified by name are quoted in this story.

Bonds has denied knowingly using steroids. A positive test was introduced as evidence during his criminal trial last year, when he was convicted of obstruction of justice by a jury that failed to reach a verdict on charges he made false statements to a grand jury when he denied knowing using performance-enhancing drugs.

Clemens has repeatedly denied drug use and was acquitted this year on charges he lied to Congress when he said he didn't take steroids or human growth hormone.

Sosa was among the 104 positive tests in baseball's 2003 anonymous survey, The New York Times reported in 2009. He told a congressional committee in 2005 that he never took illegal performance-enhancing drugs.

Bonds and Clemens fared far better in the survey than Mark McGwire did when a sample of voters were questioned by the AP before his first appearance on the ballot in December 2006. The slugger with 583 home runs received 24 percent support in the survey and 23.5 percent in the BBWAA ballot.

Since then, McGwire's support has never topped 24 percent and dropped to 19.5 percent of the 573 votes cast last January.

Rafael Palmeiro, who topped 3,000 hits and 500 home runs, was suspended for 10 days in 2005 following a positive test for Stanozolol ? he said he didn't know what caused it. He received 12.5 percent in January.

Several voters said their decisions were for this vote only and they planned to reassess their position each year. Some said that they wouldn't consider voting for Bonds, Clemens or Sosa this year because they didn't want them to have the additional honor of being elected on their first ballot.

Players who have appeared in 10 seasons and have been retired for five years are eligible for consideration by a six-member BBWAA screening committee, and a player goes on the ballot if he is supported by at least two screening committee members. A player remains on the ballot for up to 15 elections as long as he gets 5 percent of the votes every year.

Ballots must be submitted to the BBWAA by Dec. 31. Inductions will take place July 28.

Voters were contacted by telephone and email from Wednesday to Friday.

Craig Biggio, Mike Piazza and Curt Schilling also are among the 24 first-time eligibles, and Jack Morris, Jeff Bagwell and Tim Raines are the top holdover candidates.

10 Family Christmas Cards on YouTube

DEAR ABBY: My wife and I have been married for five years. I recently discovered that she made between 10 and 20 porn videos when she was 19. We got married when she was 27. We have four kids from two previous marriages.I am devastated. When I confronted her about it, she cried harder than I had ever seen. She said she was lost, and it's the biggest regret of her entire life.I understand how hard it can be to tell someone you have done something like this. I haven't led a perfect life either, and I have my own skeletons and things that I would never mention. But still, I can't get over this. ...

View Presentations On The iPhone And Edit On The iPad With New Prezi Apps

PreziiPad_ShowPrezi has a new iPhone app and has enhanced its iPad app for editing on the go. The company has also released some data from a recent survey of its users that shows how deep mobile is reaching into companies that just a few years ago would not equate the presentations they make with any kind of mobile device. The new iPhone app is read-only, designed primarily to consume presentations. It plugs into Apple TV or a projector for viewing. The iPad app has previously provided the capability to do minor updates. With the enhanced version, a user can create a new presentation, work offline and then update it. It’s the concept of the idea economy that has driven much of Prezi’s vision for what it wants to become. Mobile devices have a liberating aspect that correlates with the Prezi presentation technology. People work from home. They can go on the road, traveling light, without a laptop. If need be, they can show a presentation. Mobile is a catalyst for the new workplace. Apps like Prezi fit with this lifestyle. The service is cloud-based and has enough richness in its feature sets for people to use no matter where they are. It’s this new concept of the way we work that makes Prezi viable. But more so, Prezi is functional in a mobile context. The editor has a Zoom User Interface developed by Co-Founder Adam Somlai-Fischer, an architect and visual artist. It fits naturally with the editing capability of iPad and the easy portability of iPhone. The latency of cloud applications will always dog a service like Prezi. But that seems to be of little concern for the 1.3 million users who have downloaded the iPad app since its launch. Prezi’s architecture is the greater concern. It’s flash-based, making it vulnerable to services that use HTML5. As a native app, the service is viable as it is independent of flash in that context. But in a web environment, it is reliant on flash, making it a potential dinosaur in the fast competing world of productivity apps. Prezi competes with Apple Keynote and other presentation tools such as Powerpoint, Google Docs and Zoho. The company has $14 million in funding from Accel Partners and Sunstone Capital with additional investment from Magyar Telekom.

Alessandra Relationships Central ? Natural Male Enhancement ...

Natural male enhancement to get a penis size up to 9 in . in length, more thickness, a harder erection, a larger flaccid size, and also enhance your performance in the bedroom is not just probable, it may be guaranteed. The keyword to pay attention to in that previous sentence is ?can?. And that?s because it?s vital that you follow down a wise path if you want to effectively (and naturally) enhance your manhood? without the typical consequences.

In this post here I?m going to share with you my top 4 tips for getting an incredible manhood which i unfortunately needed to learn the tough way. The good news is that I took action, I made mistakes, and i also learned from. The good thing for you is that you be able to take advantage of the understanding I gained to make sure you start on the right feet with increasing your size.

Listed below are My Top 4 Tips To Increase Your Manhood? Effortlessly, Naturally, And also Faster You Think?

1 . Eat right and exercise? Are you surprised? Were you anticipating me to say on the first tip some thing along the lines of ?strap upon 50 pounds of metal to your penis and get bigger in two days?? Well my good friend, contrary to what you could see usually on the web, the initial step to get a bigger diathesis is actually to improve your overall health.

Exactly why is that important?

Properly, consider it: Your penis is mounted on your whole body, right? I hope it is! (LOL) Properly, what you do using the rest of your whole body will also have an effect on your manhood as well.

By consuming healthier (such as getting more fresh fruits, nuts, proteins, healthy body fat, and antioxidants) in your diet, you will definitely make a natural penile enhancement method A lot more effective. The key reason why is because healthy eating promotes stronger blood circulation. Stronger blood circulation into your penile shaft = a larger, harder, and healthier penile!

So far as fitness is concerned, exercising assists with 2 ways. One, it helps also with increasing blood circulation. And also secondly, it helps with decreasing tension. Too much tension can most certainly cause erection issues.

second . Avoid unnatural enlargement methods? Unnatural enlargement techniques will not only prevent you from getting which penis size you have always dreamed of getting, they are going to also cause several pretty disturbing side-effects with your manhood. Some of these side-effects can in fact be long term.

It is vital that you avoid unnatural techniques not just because of side-effects, but also the potential of developing diseases and possibly getting a deformed penile (which is the greatest side-effect of surgery)!

In the event that all that wasn?t sufficient, unnatural techniques (ironically) cost much more than effective natural methods! Go determine!

4. Stick with organic male enhancement? If you want to obtain all those amazing advantages I mentioned in the beginning informed, then a only way you will definitely arrive is with natural methods. The key reason why is because only a organic method is efficient at doing EVERYTHING necessary to increase your size, increase your performance, and boost the health of the male organ.

The best natural method which i recommend (and personally used myself with incredible results) are natural penile exercises.

Exercising your manhood is a surefire method to get all of the benefits of a proper endowed male organ. It is because exercising your manhood increases blood flow, they enhance your PC muscles, they enlarge your penile chambers, and much more. Because of how complete this method is, this only makes sense that this method would result in a COMPLETELY improved male organ.

Main point here, if you want to develop, get more powerful, and get healthier with your diathesis, then I recommend you eat healthier and exercise a minimum of 3 times per week, avoid unnatural enlargement techniques, and stick with all natural enhancement (such as penis exercises). Before you know it, you and your partner will certainly be enjoying some pretty extreme quality time together? if you catch my go!

Are you ready to Enlarge Your Penis QUICK, grow longer and thicker in weeks, and give your lover SHOUTING orgasms? Well, I highly recommend the Penis Advantage workout program. This award winning program is safe, efficient, permanent, and you can download every thing INSTANTLY (no embarrassing prevents at a store or packages to receive)! I went from 5. five inches to seven. 5 inches within 8 weeks using this powerful plan!

> > For additional information, click on http://www.IncreasePenisSizeFast.info to learn more!

CAUTION: The program is EXTREMELY efficient, and I recommend you stop the program for 48-72 hrs if you start to grow more than an inch inside a weeks moment.

Senate takes up UN disability treaty

WASHINGTON (AP) ? A U.N. treaty promoting equal rights for the disabled faced an uncertain future in the Senate Tuesday as Republicans objected to taking up an international treaty during a lame-duck session of Congress and expressed concerns about ceding authority to the United Nations.

Supporters of the Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities, which was signed by the George W. Bush administration in 2006, stressed that it was modeled after the 1990 Americans with Disabilities Act and required no changes in U.S. law.

But 36 Republicans in September signed a letter opposing any action on international treaties during the post-election session. The opposition has more than enough to defeat the treaty, which needs a two-thirds majority to be ratified.

The Senate voted 61-36 to move the treaty to the floor for debate.

The convention has been signed by 154 nations and ratified by 126 of those nations. President Barack Obama signed it in 2009.

Sen. John Kerry, D-Mass., chairman of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, said the impact of the treaty "will echo around the world." He said the Americans with Disabilities Act is the gold standard for protecting the rights of the disabled and the treaty would "take that gold standard and extend it to countries that have never heard of disability rights." He said that it would benefit disabled American veterans who want to travel or work abroad.

The Leadership Conference on Civil and Human Rights, which represents more than 210 national organizations, said ratification "will reflect U.S. commitment to disability rights and core American values such as the dignity of the individual, access to justice and the right to education."

But opponents, led by Republican Sen. Mike Lee of Utah, say that international treaties are by their nature a threat to American sovereign authority. Lee also says treaty provisions referring to the "best interests of the child" could lead to the state, and not parents, deciding what is in a child's best interest and that language stating that the disabled should have equal rights to reproductive health services could lead to abortions.

That, said Kerry, was "absolutely, positively, factually inaccurate." He said the treaty only states that a country's laws permitting or banning health procedures should apply to the disabled as well.

Republicans starting to rebel against tax pledge

With the fiscal cliff looming for the United States, some Republican members of Congress said Sunday they are ready to break a long standing pledge not to raise taxes.

"The only pledge we should be making to each other is to avoid becoming Greece. And Republicans should put revenue on the table," South Carolina Sen. Lindsey Graham said on ABC's "This Week."

Read more of the discussion of the fiscal on "This Week" today.

Graham's comments followed those by another Republican senator, Saxby Chambliss of Georgia, who said last week he'll no longer abide by the pledge.

"I care more about my country than I do about a 20-year-old pledge," he said in a local interview.

He got support today from House member Peter King, another Republican from New York.

"I agree entirely with Saxby Chambliss -- a pledge he signed 20 years ago, 18 years ago is for that Congress," King said on NBC's "Meet the Press." He added, "The world is changed and the economic situation is different."

Read Matthew Dowd's analysis of the efforts to avoid the fiscal cliff.

This growing chorus is about the pledge that Americans for Tax Reform president Grover Norquist has gotten hundreds of Republicans to sign. But in an interview with ABC News, Norquist says it's just a few deserters.

"The people who have made a commitment to their constituents are largely keeping it," he said. "The fact is there is more support for both protecting the rates, you saw the Republican leader in the house say rates are non-negotiable, and he also talked about revenue coming from growth."

But President Obama has said rates will go up for the wealthy. There could be some political cover for Republicans if the country actually goes over the cliff. All the Bush era tax cuts would expire, including those for the wealthy. Congress could then vote to actually reduce taxes for everyone expect the rich. Therefore, they wouldn't technically raise taxes and violate Norquist's pledge.

But Nordquist said he doesn't think the public would buy those political moves, and he also doesn't think the country will actually go over the cliff.

"I think we'll continue the tax cuts. Not raise taxes $500 billion. Obama made the correct decision (by extending the Bush tax cuts) two years ago," Norquist told us.

Leading Democratic Sen. Richard Durbin also said he believes a deal is possible now that the Thanksgiving holiday break is over.

"We can solve this problem," he said on "This Week," adding: "There's no excuse. We're back in town."

Little Improvement Ideas That Will Give Your Bath Some Pizzazz

If you live in an old home, or, perhaps you are currently renting your place, there is a possibility you dislike the look of your bathroom. Maybe its fixtures are worn out, maybe it doesn?t have enough storage space, or maybe its style just doesn?t complement your taste. Whatever the problems are, one thing is for sure: you want to flip its look.

Of course, a renovation is always a great idea. But, if your budget and schedule are tight, this is not the best option for you. Before you lose hope, though, there are other ways you can do to bring the dazzle back to your bath without the need to move walls, plumbing, doors and windows. What follows below are mini bathroom makeover ideas you can try with a tiny investment of time, effort and cash.

Mind your fabrics

There is nothing more gloomy than bleached-out or stained towels, bath mat, window treatments and shower curtain. So for the quickest bathroom makeover, treat your bath to a new set of fabrics. Pick new towels in cheerful tones and hang them on a towel rod. Or, you may simply roll each piece and place the rolled-up towels altogether in a wire basket, wooden bin or glass canister. For the window treatments, bath mat and shower curtain, don?t be afraid to go for bold prints or patterns to add more interest to your bath. Make sure, however, that the colors and prints of the fabrics you pick are coordinated so that your bathroom won?t look cluttered.

Invest in space-saving cabinets

All too often, bathrooms have limited floor space making it impossible to add bulky storage solutions. If your bath has the same issue, your best bet is to tuck tall, skinny cabinets into available corners or wisely use one wall by adding floating shelves or wall-mounted cabinets and use them to stash toiletries. For better use of space and to reduce clutter, use bins to store smaller objects.

Pay attention to your fixtures

Your bathroom?s age will definitely show on the fixtures inside. So if the faucets, shower head and knobs are showing signs of wear and tear or are beginning to succumb to rust and hard water marks, it?s about time you change them up. This is an inexpensive and quick upgrade that will improve both the appearance and functionality of your bathroom. As a bonus, if you opt for new plumbing fixtures, you?ll get to save on your water bills as most plumbing components today are designed for efficiency.

A new lick of paint

Whether you prefer the tranquility of an all-white bath or you would like to use a vibrant color to inject your fun personality, paint is an inexpensive makeover that provides a huge payoff. If you want to create the illusion of vastness, a monochromatic color scheme is the way to go. If you want to add luxurious warmth to your bath, combining warm whites is definitely a good option.

Improve illumination

Good lighting makes a bathroom look better. So if you always feel like you shower in gloom every morning no matter how sunny it is, or you?re frequently surprised to see new wrinkles and dark shadows on your face whenever you look at the mirror, there is a good chance that your bath has terrible lighting.

Fortunately, improving your bath?s lighting isn?t difficult. Simply replace dated fixtures with inexpensive yet efficient finds from your local home improvement store and add new ones in areas where you usually do your bathroom activities. For sure, with the new lights installed, there is no reason for you and your bath to look somber.

Prison Planet.com ? Aspartame-Cancer Link Exposed: Increasing ...

Elizabeth Renter
Prisonplanet.com
Nov 24, 2012

There have been several studies over the years that established a link between?aspartame consumption and cancer risk. But, these studies were frequently criticized as being too small, only capturing a short period of time, and otherwise not living up to strict scientific standards. A new study, however, addresses these concerns and substantiates what the previous ones already said: that aspartame in diet soda can increase your risk of certain types of cancer, exponentially. It seems the aspartame-cancer link has been exposed?again.

The Aspartame-Cancer Link

Scientists looked at data from the Nurses? Health Study and the Health Professionals Follow-Up Study for a period of 22 years, including over 77,000 female study subjects and nearly 48,000 males. In all, the giant study looked at ?2,278,396 person-years of data?, the most of all previous aspartame studies.

Study participants were asked about their diets every two years. In prior studies, questions about aspartame were only asked once, opening them up to error and criticism. What this study found, however, is frightening.

One can of diet soda each day can increase leukemia risk in men and women by 42 percent, increase multiple myeloma risk in men by?102 percent, and increase the risk of non-Hodgkin lymphoma by 31 percent in men.

The results are frightening, but not surprising. Though previous research was criticized for not being scientifically sound?the findings were similar.?Another study focusing on the aspartame-cancer link found that of 48 rats experimented on, up to?67% of all female rats?developed tumors roughly the size of golf balls or larger. The male population also suffered, with 21% of the males developing similar cancerous growths.

What?s possibly even more concerning is that aspartame is created using genetically modified bacteria. Revealing how aspartame is made, an article from? The Independent reports that both a Monsanto source and a Monsanto spokesperson admits that aspartame creation process did in fact involve genetically modified bacteria.

?We have two strains of bacteria ? one is traditionally modified and one is genetically modified,? said the source. ?It?s got a modified enzyme. It has one amino acid different.?

Stay Away

Although there are other sources of aspartame, diet soda remains the most popular. If you were ever wondering, ?is diet soda bad for you?, the answer is a sound ?yes?. In the United States, we consume an estimated 5,250 tons of aspartame each year, of which 86% is in the form of diet sodas.

Recognizing the dangers of diet soda, many people limit themselves to just one can each day. But this latest research shows that one can is enough to do significant damage. And, switching back to a sugared soda isn?t any better?researchers found men drinking one or more regular sodas saw a 66% increase in non-Hodgkin lymphoma.

What?s the solution? Quit drinking soda. If you?re in it for the caffeine, try green tea and it?s many benefits or even coffee. If you prefer cold and refreshing, have iced tea.

Changing your habits takes motivation and dedication (follow-thru). This research showing the aspartame-cancer link yet again should provide the motivation, but it?s up to you to take steps towards reclaiming your health.

Suicide attempts increasing in crisis-stricken Greece

GENEVA (Reuters) - Kris Kristofferson -- Oxford scholar, athlete, U.S. Army helicopter pilot, country music composer, one-time roustabout, film actor, singer, lover of women, three times a husband and father of eight -- seems ready to meet his maker. At least, that was the clear impression he left with an audience of middle-aged-and-upwards fans at a concert in Geneva this week, a message underscored by his 28th and latest album, "Feeling Mortal" and its coffin-dark cover. ...

Air New Zealand to unveil ?Hobbit?-themed plane

22 hrs.

Air New Zealand already has hobbits instructing passengers on how to fly safely. Now, you can soon see the creatures soaring over the Pacific and the Atlantic as well.

The airline has transformed a Boeing 777-300ER into a ?flying billboard? for ?The Hobbit:?An Unexpected Journey,? the first installment in Peter Jackson?s series?adapted from J.R.R. Tolkien?s book and a prequel to the blockbuster ?Lord of the Rings? saga.

A ?massive? decal inspired by the new movie covers the length of the plane, the largest graphic ever to be applied to an aircraft, said Jodi Williams, head of international marketing for Air New Zealand. It took about six days and 400 man hours to install the decal.

The airline has been secretive about the exact design, revealing only that it worked with Jackson?s Weta Workshop to create the motif, which features imagery from the film. The world will get its first glimpse of the aircraft on Saturday morning New Zealand time (Friday afternoon U.S. Eastern time), when it is unveiled in Auckland. The plane will then head to Los Angeles, where it is scheduled to land Saturday afternoon. The aircraft will fly primarily to L.A. and London.

Both markets are very important to Air New Zealand, which is hoping its partnership with the makers of ?The Hobbit? will help attract visitors from North America and Europe.

?It puts us out there and creates more awareness. And it gives people more of a reason to actually select New Zealand to travel,? Williams said.

?It?s very challenging for Air New Zealand to get that brand presence and that awareness because we don?t have a significant marketing budget, so by actually working in partnership with a movie that?s shot in New Zealand and shows New Zealand, it makes perfect sense.?

The airline?s first ?Hobbit?-themed effort ? a special flight safety video that features all kinds of creatures from Middle Earth ? is already a hit, with global media attention and more than 9 million views on YouTube since it was released on Halloween.?

The production is the first movie-aligned safety video for Air New Zealand, although the airline is known for its fun and quirky lessons on how to stay safe at 35,000 feet. Past videos have featured hunky rugby players, flight attendants wearing only body paint, and exercise enthusiast Richard Simmons.

Air New Zealand also likes to experiment with the look of its aircraft, introducing several planes painted black from nose to tail in recent months.

But it is Tolkien?s fantasy that?s putting the self-proclaimed ?airline of Middle Earth? in the spotlight right now.

Travel industry analyst Henry Harteveldt said Air New Zealand's "Hobbit" efforts are the most impressive movie marketing tie-ins he?s seen any airline do.

?Short-term, this will probably benefit the movie more than the airline, at least as far as North American passengers are concerned,? said Harteveldt, co-founder of the Atmosphere Research Group.

?Long-term, this marketing tie-in should help Air New Zealand successfully increase interest in visiting the country among travelers.?

The airline?s biggest challenge is the physical distance between the U.S. and New Zealand, he added. Travelers often balk at such a long and expensive flight, but ?Hobbit? fans inspired to book movie-related tours may be undaunted by those factors, Harteveldt said. New Zealand?s tourism industry is eager to repeat the boost in visitors it saw after the ?Lord of the Rings? trilogy.

Wellington, New Zealand, will host the global premiere of ?The Hobbit:?An Unexpected Journey? on Nov. 28. The movie debuts in the U.S. on Dec. 14.

(AP) ? Two people died and dozens were hurt Thursday when at least 100 vehicles collided in Southeast Texas in a pileup that left trucks twisted on top of each other and authorities rushing to pull survivors from the miles of wreckage.

The collision occurred in extremely foggy conditions at about 8 a.m. Thanksgiving Day on Interstate 10 southwest of Beaumont, a Gulf Coast city about 80 miles east of Houston.

Officials at Acadian Ambulance service told KFDM-TV that at least 51 people have been taken to area hospitals and at least eight are critically hurt.

It wasn't immediately clear how the pileup began, but Jefferson County Sheriff's Office Deputy Rod Carroll said the fog was so thick that deputies didn't immediately realize they were dealing with multiple accidents.

"It is catastrophic," Carroll said. "I've got cars on top of cars."

I-10's eastbound lanes were expected to remain closed for most of Thursday.

Texas Department of Public Safety trooper Stephanie Davis told KFDM that two people in an SUV died after the crash. She said at least 100 cars and trucks were involved in the accident.

Carroll said uninjured drivers tried to help as authorities sorted through the wreckage.

"It's just people helping people," Carroll said. "The foremost thing in this holiday season is how other travelers were helping us when we were overwhelmed, sitting and holding, putting pressure on people that were injured."

GM buying Ally assets in Europe and Latin America

(AP) ? General Motors said Wednesday that it will buy Ally Financial's operations in Europe, China and Latin America as it tries to build a global finance unit to make low-interest car loans and boost sales.

The auto giant's U.S. loan business, GM Financial, will pay $4.25 billion for the Ally assets, helping GM to better compete in markets where other automakers already have their own loan operations. Automakers with their own finance arms often subsidize loans and leases to boost sales.

The deal, which still must be approved by regulators, is expected to close in stages next year. Ally will get a $550 million premium over the book value of the assets, which was $3.7 billion in the third quarter, Ally said in a news release.

Ally, which was GM's financial arm until it was taken over by the U.S. government in the 2008 banking industry meltdown, is selling off assets to raise money to repay the government for a $17.2 billion bailout. So far Ally has repaid $5.8 billion, leaving a balance of $11.4 billion. The company used to be called GMAC Financial Services.

The move will help GM by restoring a unit that once was highly profitable before the meltdown, said Argus Research analyst Bill Selesky. It also will help GM grow in countries in which the middle class is expanding, he said.

"They believe that future growth will largely be determined by growth in emerging-market economies. They believe this is where the future of auto lending is going, to higher-growth geographies," he said.

GM will give $2 billion to GM Financial to make the purchase, the automaker said in a statement. The deal includes Ally's operations in Brazil, Mexico, Colombia, Chile, Germany, the United Kingdom, France, Italy, Belgium, the Netherlands, Sweden, Switzerland and Austria. It also includes Ally's 40 percent interest in a Chinese joint venture auto financing company.

GM Financial's assets will double to about $33 billion, and liabilities including debt will rise to $27 billion from about $12 billion today, GM said in the statement.

The move comes at a time when GM is rolling out many new models across the globe, and the increased financing ability should raise sales, Chief Financial Officer Dan Ammann said. It also will help end a disadvantage that GM had compared with its competition. GM, he said, was 10 to 15 percent behind competitors in the number of sales it was able to finance overseas.

"If we're successful in closing that, it's going to result in a significant increase in sales," he said during a conference call.

GM is happy with loans and leases made by GM Financial and would not be interested in acquiring Ally's North American businesses, Ammann said. GM bought Texas-based Americredit in 2010 for $3.5 billion and renamed it GM Financial.

In exchange for bailing out Ally, the U.S. government got 74 percent of the lender's common stock, plus $5.9 billion worth of preferred stock.

Ally last month sold its Canadian operations to the Royal Bank of Canada for $4.1 billion and a Mexican insurance business for $865 million. With the GM deal, Ally will have about $9 billion in additional cash. It could use the money to buy back the preferred stock, but Ally spokeswoman Gina Proia said no decision has been made on how to repay the government.

Privately held Ally has been looking at an initial public stock offering to get more money back the government, but that's been put on hold until stock market conditions improve.

The acquisition by GM is another step toward reassembling its global financial arm, which had been a profit center before the 2008 mortgage meltdown. GM sold a 51 percent stake in GMAC in 2006 when it was starved for cash. The new owners, led by private equity firm Cerberus Capital Management LP, ran into trouble in 2008 with bad mortgage loans and had to be bailed out by the government.

Ally Financial Inc. will now focus on its U.S. auto lending and bank holding company businesses. In May its mortgage lending and servicing subsidiary Residential Capital LLC or ResCap, filed for bankruptcy protection, severing Ally's ties to the troubled unit. Toxic mortgages made by ResCap caused most of Ally's financial problems. ResCap has since accepted a $3 billion buyout offer from a unit of Ocwen Financial Corp.

GM also owns nearly a 10 percent stake in Ally.

In the third quarter Ally made a $384 million net profit, reversing a loss from a year ago mainly because it didn't have losses from ResCap.

Ally said its global automotive services business continues to be strong, with the loans it financed increasing and improving during the third quarter, despite increased competition among lenders for automotive loans.

Meanwhile, retail deposits at its Ally Bank division increased by 22 percent, and customer accounts grew by 24 percent, the company said.

In October Ally repaid $2.9 billion of the debt it issued under a government program that backed hundreds of billions of dollars in U.S. bank debt during the financial crisis. The program is separate from the bailout. Ally said last month that it plans to repay in December the remaining $4.5 billion guaranteed under the Federal Deposit Insurance Corp. program.

The requisite of online classes for high school pupils ... - K-12 News

Bending to the will of Idaho voters, members of the?State Board of Education?voted 7-1 to ditch a requirement that Idaho high school students take two online classes to graduate.

But Monday?s decision clearly won?t be the last time the issue comes up: Nearly all of the board members said some Internet-learning mandate was necessary, to prepare public school students for the evolving, technology-dominated workforce.

On Nov. 6, voters rejected all three laws that encompassed public schools chief?Tom Luna?s?education overhaul.

Most unpopular was?Proposition 3, which included a $180 million contract for laptops ? and the law directing the State Board of Education to establish an online requirement. Board members said their repeal of the two-credit requirement essentially resets discussions with groups including the?Idaho Education Association?teachers union about what level of online learning is appropriate.

?I still want to rapidly get back to the stakeholder approach that does something regarding the integration of technology in our classrooms,? said Board President Kenneth Edmunds of Twin Falls during the meeting in Boise.

With the vote, Idaho retreats from the ranks of states ? Alabama, Florida and Michigan are the others ? requiring Internet courses to graduate.

The Idaho Education Association didn?t immediately return a phone call seeking comment on the decision.

Luna?s now-defunct education laws also included limits on collective bargaining for teachers, scaled-back job protections and a new system of merit-pay bonuses.

When the package was introduced during the 2011 Legislature, it included Luna?s proposed requirement that students take at least eight classes online to graduate.

As marchers by the hundreds circled the Idaho Capitol with banners, however, lawmakers softened the law to require only that the State Board of Education establish how many online classes would be required as part of their rules.

The board settled on two classes in November 2011.

With the outcome on Nov. 6, however, members of the board that sets Idaho education policy ? including Luna, who sits on the panel ? concluded the voters had spoken: The requirement needed to go, to be replaced by a new discussion.

?The perception in the public definitely was that the language on the ballot itself made a reference to the online graduation requirement,? said Luna, who supported the change. ?I think it?s proper that we remove that as part of the pending rule.?

Not everybody on the eight-member panel agreed.

Emma Atchley, a board member from Ashton in eastern Idaho, said she feared dumping the two-course online requirement would set back the ability of Idaho?s educational system to prepare students for the digital post-graduation world.

?If we spend a year deciding whether we?re going to have it or how we?re going to have it, and we all end up wanting it in the end anyway, we?ve just lost another year,? she said. ?I understand the political reality. But it?s very important that we do not in the end say that we shouldn?t have some online learning.?

Still, board member Richard Westerberg of Preston said the board had virtually no other option than to start from scratch, given the Election Day result.

?The vote was not equivocal,? Westerberg said. ?We need to reaffirm what the voters told us.?
