The New Kinect Is So Sensitive It Can Read Your Heartbeat

Microsoft claims that the new Kinect is so sensitive that it can see the slightest movement of your wrists and fingers, the tension of your muscles and, amazingly enough, even your heartbeat.

So next time you exercise in front of the TV, it will be able to tell how much you are really working out. But I bet there will be a lot more to this feature, like a first-person shooter reading your heart beat and muscle tension to spook you at the right moment. And kill you fore real.

I.B.M. Puts Watson to Work in Business - NYTimes.com

Since its triumph over human ?Jeopardy!? champions two years ago, I.B.M.?s Watson has explored a number of frontiers for its artificial-intelligence technology, even inventing new recipes in the kitchen.

To date, medicine has been Watson?s most focused foray. Its machine intelligence has read through vast troves of medical texts, research papers and patient records to suggest diagnosis and treatment options at institutions including the Cleveland Clinic, the Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center and the M.D. Anderson Cancer Center, and for the insurer WellPoint. Yet even its work in health care has had the feel of applied science projects ? impressive, but seemingly custom jobs rather than the beginning of a big commercial business.

I.B.M. hopes to take a big step toward mass-market commercialization of Watson on Tuesday, announcing that the technology will be applied to customer service, broadly defined. Its new offering, called IBM Watson Engagement Advisor, is being pitched as a smart assistant whose services can apply to almost any industry, but especially those that receive many customer service calls, like retailing, banking, insurance and telecommunications.

?Watson has a new job ? assisting brands,? said Manoj Saxena, the I.B.M. executive in charge of the Watson business unit.

In health care, Mr. Saxena noted, Watson has done ?high-value? work for a handful of institutions. The customer-service business, by contrast, is a ?high-volume play for us.?

This week?s announcement is the next move in an ambitious, longer-term commercialization agenda for Watson. I.B.M. plans to offer the Watson software as the equivalent of an operating system for artificial intelligence applications ? much as Microsoft?s Windows was the operating system that dominated the personal computer era.

Software developers and start-up companies, according to the I.B.M. game plan, will build software applications that run on the Watson artificial-intelligence engine ? and with them, new businesses. In a speech last week at a meeting of the National Venture Capital Association in San Francisco, Virginia M. Rometty, I.B.M.?s chief executive, said, ?We?ll launch an ecosystem where Watson is a service and you build applications around it.?

The Watson technology can either assist human customer-service representatives or take over some of their tasks. An ?Ask Watson? feature allows consumers to ask Watson questions directly from a smartphone or notebook computer and proceed, the company says, in a conversational style, either with typed text or spoken words. (Voice recognition technology would be supplied by third-party specialists, like Nuance, as is the case for Apple?s Siri question-answering service.)

The two years of development since the ?Jeopardy!? contest, Mr. Saxena said, have made Watson far faster and more compact, whether the cloud service resides on servers in an I.B.M. data center or on a corporate customer?s servers.

The original Watson was a question-and-answer machine ? with each interaction a separate question and answer. The current technology, according to Mr. Saxena, can engage a consumer in a dialogue. It can listen to and respond to, say, four or five follow-up questions and remember the previous questions a person had.

?That?s the difference,? he said, ?between a question-and-answer system and a conversational system.?

Those who have been shown demonstrations of Watson?s new capabilities sound impressed. Joyce Phillips, chief executive of ANZ Bank?s wealth management and private banking group, plans to use Watson to assist financial advisers in coming up with investment, insurance and pension offerings that are better tailored to the needs of individual clients.

ANZ, a major banking group in Australia and New Zealand, is still testing the Watson technology. But Ms. Phillips said: ?We?re pretty confident that this technology will help transform our business. It?s a tool that will make our advisers smarter.?

At the Nielsen Company, the media measurement and market research firm, Randall Beard, global head of advertiser solutions, wants to use Watson to instantly sift through and make sense of all the data advertisers receive about their Web, social media, print and television marketing campaigns.

?You want to optimize campaigns in real time across every marketing channel, to see what people are watching and what are they buying to accurately measure ad effectiveness,? Mr. Beard said. ?We think there?s a real opportunity here.?

But the Watson opportunity has not yet been tested. Companies so far have signed agreements to develop projects to try out the I.B.M. technology. Out in the wild, when thousands of customers are asking questions all at once, will the promise of Watson?s technology prove itself? Will its conversations with people seem smart, as if it is listening and learning?

That would appear to be a tall order. Still, Watson?s introduction to the wider world will be far more controlled than Siri?s introduction in October 2011. Amid high expectations, fueled by Apple?s polished marketing campaign, Siri was instantly subjected to all kinds of messy human questions, on every imaginable subject. Inevitably, Siri often stumbled at first, becoming the subject of ridicule and jokes on late-night television.

But the bar will most likely be lower for Watson in business than it was for Siri in the consumer market. If the basis of comparison for Watson is the current state of voice-automated systems in call centers, the newcomer, analysts say, could well come out a winner.

?People are free-form, and they ask questions in different ways,? said Mary Wardley, an analyst at IDC. ?If Watson can learn and offer more personalized answers, it could be a very useful tool in solving customer service problems.?

Genetic risk for obesity found in many Mexican young adults

May 21, 2013 ? As many as 35 percent of Mexican young adults may have a genetic predisposition for obesity, said a University of Illinois scientist who conducted a study at the Universidad Aut?noma de San Luis Potos?.

"The students who inherited genetic risk factors from both parents were already 15? pounds heavier and 2 inches bigger around the waist than those who hadn't. They also had slightly higher fasting glucose levels," said Margarita Teran-Garcia, a U of I professor of food science and human nutrition.

In the study, 251 18- to 25-year-olds were tested for risk alleles on the FTO gene as part of the Up Amigos project, a collaboration of scientists at the U of I and the Mexican university. The researchers are following the 10,000 yearly applicants to the Universidad Aut?noma de San Luis Potos? to learn how changes in students' weight, body mass index (BMI), and eating and exercise habits affect their health over time.

According to Teran-Garcia, the FTO gene is associated with a predisposition to obesity, increased BMI, and increased waist circumference. These traits can in turn contribute to many health-related problems, including cardiovascular disease and diabetes.

Of the young adults tested in the study, 15 percent had inherited the genetic risk from both parents -- in other words, they carried two copies of the risk allele. Another 20 percent had inherited risk from one parent, meaning they had one copy of the risk allele. Sixty-five percent of the students in the study did not carry the risk allele.

"If young people realize early that they have this predisposition, they can fight against it. If they are at risk for obesity, eating a healthy diet and getting regular exercise is even more important for them," Teran-Garcia said.

She noted that 85 percent of Hispanics in the United States are of Mexican origin.

Although FTO markers and analysis are available for large groups of Caucasians, Asians, and African-Americans, few studies have examined the effects of this gene in Mexican and Mexican- American populations.

"This is the first study to target young adults in Mexico, although one other study has followed older Mexican adults who had already been diagnosed with diabetes, obesity, and obesity-related diseases," she said.

Scientists hypothesize that "fat" genes may be influenced by epigenetic modifications, she said. "So even if you have this predisposition, you may be able to change the way those genes behave by eating the right foods and getting more exercise. These good habits are especially important for young people who have a genetic risk for obesity."

"FTO genotype is associated with body mass index and waist circumference in Mexican young adults" is available online in the Open Journal of Genetics (2013, 3, 44-48). Co-authors are Teran-Garcia, Itzel Vazquez-Vidal, and Michelle Mosley, of the U of I Department of Food Science and Human Nutrition, Flavia C.D. Andrade of the U of I Department of Kinesiology and Community Health, and Eduardo Medina-Cerda and Celia Aradillas-Garcia of the Universidad Auton?ma de San Luis Potos? in Mexico.

Vitor Belfort gets highlight-reel knockout of Luke Rockhold at UFC on FX 8

Vitor Belfort gave fans in his home country of Brazil plenty to be happy about at UFC on FX 8 on Saturday, delivering a first-round knockout of Luke Rockhold that is sure to make UFC highlight reels for years to come.

Belfort held off Rockhold's takedown attempts early, and then set up to deliver a perfect knockout kick halfway through the round. Near the fence, Belfort landed a spinning kick to Rockhold's face. It landed flush, and Rockhold fell to the ground. Belfort finished with ground and pound. The fight was stopped at 2:32 in the first round.

It's Belfort's second straight win by knockout. He knocked out Michael Bisping in January, and before that, moved up to light heavyweight and lost a title fight to Jon Jones. His record is now 23-10. He already has a loss against UFC champion Anderson Silva, but is this fight enough to ask for another title shot? He wouldn't say.

"I'm here to fight. I don't pick fights. I accept fights," Belfort said after the win.

There was plenty of bad blood between the two before the fight began. Belfort is one of the UFC fighters who has an exemption to use testosterone replacement therapy. Rockhold viewed this as sanctioned cheating, and wasn't afraid to say so. The two had to be separated during Friday's weigh-ins as Rockhold got in Belfort's face.

This was Rockhold's first fight in the UFC. He is now 11-2, with most of his wins coming in Strikeforce, where he was the middleweight champion.

Student fights and politics: Religious groups venturing into QAU
Islamabad, May 20: Although there are six councils in Quaid-e-Azam University (QAU), they have never been involved in politics due to which the environment of the university has been peaceful compared to other universities.

However, a religious group has been trying to establish a council, and problems in the university have started increasing.

For the last one month, councils have been resisting the religious group but the group has retorted. It lodged a criminal case against two members of a council, and even tried to bring blasphemy in the issue due to which both students had to quit studies.

The situation has created resentment among the students of all six councils.

A student of QAU, requesting anonymity, said there are a Punjab Council, Pakhtun Council, Mehran Council, Siraiki Council, Baloch Council and Gilgit-Baltistan Council in the university. These were established over two decades ago except for the GB council, which was established two years ago.

"Although sometimes they (councils) have differences, they have never supported involvement of politicians in the university.
Last year (in March) a religious group had tried to hold a meeting to form a new council in the university, but the other councils stopped it," he said.

He said that in the first week of April this year, the same religious group had announced a meeting and had invited around 200 students from various educational institutions of the federal capital to participate.

However, the councils stopped the meeting, resulting in increased differences. In the last week of April, some students of religious group had scuffled with students of the Gilgit-Baltistan Council.

"Two students of Mathematics and Defence and Strategic Studies departments, who belong to the religious group, lodged a complaint in the Secretariat Police Station against two other students of the History and International Relations departments (both belonging to G-B Councils). A First Information Report (FIR) was registered against them, and both students were forced to leave the university or face arrest," he said.

Another student of QAU said students belonging to the religious group tried to make the fight an issue of blasphemy.

"He (a student of the religious group) claimed that he had a beard, and the opponent had pulled at his hair during the fight, which should be considered blasphemy," the student said.

Investigation Officer of Secretariat Police Station Ghulam Sarwar Naeemi also confirmed that the students had tried to register a case of blasphemy.

"We told them that it cannot be considered blasphemy and registered a case under section 337-A, 182 and 506/34 (fight and threat to kill) between the two groups," he said.

He added that the complainants had said a patch up was being arranged between the rivals therefore no action had been taken, but so far he had not received the patch up in writing.

A student belonging to the Punjab Council said he had learnt that political personalities of the federal capital belonging to a religious party had allegedly used their influence for registration of the FIR.

"Because of the FIR, both students cannot continue their studies; even the management of the university has given permission to the police to arrest both students from the hostel or university campus," he said.

He said a truce was being negotiated, as otherwise both students would be unable to join their studies, and their low attendance may bar them from appearing for the exams.

"It seems a patch up will be made at the cost of allowing the religious group to continue its activities within the university," he said.

"We don't want political activities in the university because once political groups are established, educational activities will stop and the students will be used for politics," he said.

Students of QAU have appealed to the management of the university to take notice of political activities within the university and ensure a peaceful environment for education.

Registrar QAU Dr Shafique-ur-Rehman said that an officer of the university had been inquiring of the issue and the decision regarding the status of the students would be taken after the completion of the enquiry. Dawn

HEC expanding degree attestation facility
Islamabad: Higher Education Commission (HEC) has finalised arrangements to expand the office space and hire the services of more officials to make the process of attestation of degrees easier for the general public. Talking to media, HEC Chairman Dr Javed R Laghari said the decision to expand the facility was taken after ameeting with the officials and will be implemented by June 1. He said the commission has also decided to hire the services of more courier companies to avoid delays in sending or receiving degrees from other countries for attestation. He said the degrees' verification has become veryimportant during the previous years and it has become an essential requirement for the overseas Pakistani to get their degrees attested for job or business purposes. He said 500 to 1000 people are visiting HEC main office for degrees' attestation and are bound to wait for a week or more due to low manpower and insufficient space. But now HEC has finalised plan to open more windows with computers by expanding the area and hire more trained officials to facilitate the people. The people will now be able to get their degrees attested within three or four days or in a single day, if they needed urgently and charges would be nominal for urgent process. The chairman said HEC has recently cleared the backlog of around 40,000 degrees which were pending for attestation. app

Libraries in Islamabad colleges in dismal condition
lslamabad: Libraries are a historic source of knowledge for students. But a tour around Islamabad reveals that students at Islamabad colleges have little in the way of libraries and books.

Mohammad Hanif, a student of a federal government college, was assigned a task by a teacher to inquire that how many people are in the country.

He consulted the college library to complete the task but could not get the latest information about the population of the country.

"Most of the books in the college library were published in the 1960s and 70s. There are even books written in Bengali, although a large number of students cannot read Bengali. I felt my assignment was not up to the mark. I told the teacher but he did not notice. We really need up-to-date knowledge but our library failed to provide the latest information," he said.

Hanif is not the only student who has been facing problems regarding the library. Most of the students cannot get the latest information from libraries due to which the trend of research is decreasing.

A library is the oldest repository of knowledge, and it has always remained a focus among Muslim and non-Muslim rulers. It means that libraries have been playing a vital role in supporting and promoting education and research in educational institutions.

Islamabad, the capital and the most modern city of the country, must be exemplary for rest of the college libraries in this respect.

A professor of the college, requesting not to be named, said that unfortunately the condition of libraries in the capital colleges did not seem very good.

On the one hand, there is an acute shortage of books in these libraries and on the other hand, most of the books stuffed irregularly in different shelves are not only irrelevant and outdated but also lack the latest research and intellectual activities.

Library material like books, reference material (dictionaries, encyclopedias, maps, atlases, journals, periodicals, etc.) are mostly outdated and in the worst possible condition, he added.

"Meanwhile, in modern educational institutions in the world, the use of audio visuals is an integral part of libraries. The libraries of ICT colleges are not equipped with current technology as e-books, digital databases, HEC digital databases access, computers, internet facility, CDs, DVDs and computer library catalogue," he said.

"There is hardly a single library among all the ICT colleges where there is facility of photocopy in the library, if required by the students, as it generally happens. Even in the teaching methodology and the syllabi, there is no room for teachers to even ask students to refer extra books on the subject being taught," he said.

The libraries of the colleges, which used to provide for the academic needs of teachers, students and researchers, have turned into a reading hall. One can see the students there reading only newspapers, he added.

One of the students at H-9 College said: "The library does not have any computer so no one can get internet facility here. It's ridiculous to look to traditional books when information today is so readily available on computer.

We cannot enjoy turning pages as everything is available on a click of a mouse. Here, the power supply is irregular, fans are not in working order. The furniture is old and mostly broken. There is nothing in the library which attracts us."

The president of the federal government college teachers association, Prof Tahir, said that another problem is, the interiors of the libraries, mostly with broken furniture, shabby walls, no cataloging and unhygienic conditions. This situation has diverted the attention and energy of the students to cell phones.

This is the reason that students sit in groups and individually in lawns of the colleges in their free periods and either listen to loud music or remain busy in chatting.

A teacher, on condition of anonymity, said that the library staff with unconcerned and frustrated attitude add fuel to the fire and repel the students away from the library. The books in cupboards always remain locked; library staff feels a great burden to open it for a student and to remain present while the student goes through the books.

In the oldest and the biggest college of ICT, Islamabad Model Postgraduate H-8/2, there is not any subscribed journal even for M.A/M.Sc students, he said.

Another teacher said: "There are two posts of Librarians in Islamabad Model Postgraduate College of commerce H-8/4. Both the posts of the librarians are not occupied. One is vacant because no posting has been made ever since the college was upgraded to a Postgraduate level whereas the other librarian is on ex-Pakistan leave since one year and no substitute has been provided till today. What a joke it is with the libraries of a Postgraduate college with more than 3,500 students."

An official of the Federal Directorate of Education (FDE) said that education had never been on the priority of any of the governments, the administration also took it for granted to address serious issues of the educational institutions well in time.

Library funding is stagnant and no extra funds are put towards purchasing new books.

Students have lost interest and given up the reading habit because of unavailability of quality books. One of the students said "We need credible information but outdated books give us misinformation."

An official of the ministry of CAD said that with the passage of time, libraries are becoming e-libraries, digital libraries and virtual libraries. But in colleges there are not any directions towards this.

Even the library fund, which is deducted from the fees of students, is not utilized for the improvement of the libraries.

On questioning a librarian of a boys' college regarding outdated books and shortage of books he replied that the principal was not interested in the purchase of new books because they were costly.

"Library committees are formed in the colleges for better management of libraries but their meetings never held. The members of the committee are college teachers but they do not show interest in the improvement in the infrastructure of the library and in purchase of books," he said.

"The library staff is not equipped with the modern technology and there are no training programmes for Librarians and library assistants. Internet facility is not provided to libraries which is an essential source of knowledge and library automation," he said.

"There is not any service structure of librarians and they are never promoted. Once a librarian is appointed in BPS-17 he retires in the same scale after serving more than 35 years. Librarians are selected by Federal Public Service Commission (FPSC).The procedure and requirement is similar to a lecturer who retires from government service in BPS-19 or above," he said.

Professor Deedar Ali Baloch, General Secretary FGCTA said that for the improvement of libraries and to create the reading habits among the students and teachers, revolutionary steps should be taken. Libraries should be supplied the latest textbooks and reference materials. Training programs for library staff should be started. Books seminars and books exhibitions should be arranged in ICT colleges.

It is encouraging that the habit of reading in girls is increasing. The library assistant at Margalla College F-7/4 was very much satisfied with the number of readers in the college. Girl students spend most of their spare time in the libraries of the colleges.

The shortage of books in the library is a problem, she pointed out. Moreover, our library is consisting of five rooms and it is difficult to move in these rooms in search of books.

Library must be in a big room (hall), she said.

Director General FDE, Dr Shahnaz A Riaz said that considering the availability of funds, FDE has been purchasing new books and trying to upgrade libraries.

"Every month we instruct educational institutions to purchase three to four books of renowned authors. I am also working to equip libraries with modern technologies," she said. Dawn

AIOU enjoys high rating on quality assurance
Islamabad: Allama Iqbal Open University (AIOU) is enjoying best rating on quality assurance providing education through distance learning system as compared to other open universities in the world.

This was stated by Open University Sri Lanka's former vice-chancellor Prof Uma Coomaraswamy who had been appointed by the Commonwealth of Learning (COL) as an external verifier on quality assurance.

As per the survey conducted by the COL-RIM, the university performance indicators on quality assurance were highly satisfactory and it was noted that the AIOU was moving ahead to achieve the international standard in providing quality education to its students across the country.

She was addressing a reception, hosted by AIOU Vice Chancellor Prof Dr Nazir Ahmed Sangi at the conclusion of her weeklong visit to Pakistan.

She underlined the need of inculcating quality culture within the university premises. She hoped that the university would successfully review itself to meet the international standard.

Prof Uma Coomaraswamy further said that she found a lot of commitment and enthusiasm among the staff of the university for achieving the targets on quality assurance. She held useful interaction and programme-review exercise with the university's staff during her stay in Pakistan.

She called for undertaking necessary exercise to improve the capacity building of their staff. She added that the AIOU was doing much better work in promoting skill-based and job-oriented education, as compared to other universities in the region.

Speakingon the occasion Dr Sangi highlighted the steps being taken by the university for quality assurance as per the requirement of COL. He also mentioned the incentives being provided to the drop-out needy students, helping them to continue their study.

The AIOU has recently entered into agreements with various regional and international educational institutions for exchange of academic programmes and research-based material to improve the teaching plan through distance learning system.

He said that university is planning to set up science laboratories at almost all the regional campuses to promote science education in the country and mobile laboratories will also be deployed. app

(AP) ? A week out from the French Open, Serena Williams is one victory away from winning her fourth straight tournament.

The top-ranked American overcame an early break of her serve to ease past Romanian qualifier Simona Halep 6-3, 6-0 Saturday and reach the Italian Open final, extending her career-best winning run to 23 matches.

Williams is coming off consecutive titles in Miami, Charleston and Madrid.

In Sunday's final, Williams will face third-seeded Victoria Azarenka, who kept her concentration through two rain delays to beat seventh-seeded Sara Errani 6-0, 7-5.

In the men's tournament, six-time champion Rafael Nadal reached the final by defeating sixth-seeded Tomas Berdych 6-2, 6-4, a day after Berdych rallied to beat top-ranked Novak Djokovic.

After being pushed to three sets in his previous two matches ? against Latvian qualifier Ernests Gulbis and fourth-seeded David Ferrer ? Nadal appeared back in his comfort zone against Berdych.

Nadal's final opponent will be either Roger Federer or 36th-ranked Benoit Paire of France, who were playing a night match at the Foro Italico.

Williams' only title at this clay-court event came in 2002, when she beat Justine Henin in the final. That was also the year she won her only French Open title. Last year in Paris, Williams lost in the opening round of a major tournament for the first time, falling to 111th-ranked Virginie Razzano of France.

Roland Garros starts next Sunday.

"I love the clay. I haven't had many wins at Roland Garros but I do love it. I love to slide," Williams said. "My goal is just to win a match there this year."

Williams has twice won 21 in a row before, although both of those runs came a decade ago, in 2002 and 2003.

Martina Navratilova established the longest women's win run in the Open Era at 74 matches in 1984.

At 31, Williams is back at the top of her game after missing 11 months in 2010 and 2011 with a right foot injury and a pulmonary embolism.

The 64th-ranked Halep entered with an impressive run herself, having beaten former top-10 player Daniela Hantuchova to qualify then 2009 French Open champion Svetlana Kuznetsova in the first round. That was followed in succession with wins over fourth-seeded Agnieszka Radwanksa, 13th-seeded Roberta Vinci and two-time Rome winner Jelena Jankovic.

Solid off both sides and an agile mover, the 2008 French Open girls champion took a set off Williams in their only previous meeting in the second round of Wimbledon two years ago. Halep tested Williams again at the start of this match, angling baseline shots to the corners to force the 15-time Grand Slam winner into errors.

Halep broke to take a 2-1 lead in the first set, but Williams broke right back and cruised from there as she gained the measure of her opponent and began to win the longer rallies.

Williams went directly to the practice court after winning.

"I was unhappy with some things today," she said. "I want to do well here as well as (in Paris)."

Azarenka is in a final for the first time since beating Williams for the title in February at Doha, Qatar. That followed her Australian Open victory. Since then, Azarenka has been slowed by right ankle and left foot injuries.

Errani reached last year's French Open final and was the first Italian semifinalist in this tournament since Raffaella Reggi won the 1985 event in Taranto.

Azarenka did well to take the Foro Italico crowd out of the match early on and never trailed in the second set.

Obama to address Morehouse College commencement

WASHINGTON (AP) ? President Barack Obama is delivering the commencement address at Morehouse College, the historically black, all-male institution that counts Martin Luther King Jr. among its alumni.

The Atlanta-based private school says about 500 students will receive undergraduate degrees Sunday, becoming what are known as "Morehouse Men."

It is Obama's second graduation speech of the year. Last Sunday, he urged graduates of Ohio State University in Columbus to become vigorous participants in their democracy.

After the speech, Obama is scheduled to attend a Democratic Senate fundraiser in Atlanta.

Obama's third and final commencement address of the season comes Friday at the U.S. Naval Academy in Annapolis, Md.

Sporting greats attend opening of new PAC sports facility

Education, News, Sport ? By UniSA student on May 17, 2013 11:33 AM

By MAX BURFORD

Ian and Trevor Chappell returned to their former school last week?as Prince Alfred College unveiled their new multipurpose sports facility.

The Australian cricket greats spoke to a crowd of over 1300 keen onlookers at the school?s official opening of the $15 million Recreation, Education and Development (RED) Centre.

?The facility is fantastic ? a lot different to the gym when I was at the school,? Ian said.

?They have a good tradition of excellence.?

Despite Greg Chappell being unable to attend the opening with his brothers, Ian and Trevor spoke on his behalf in praising PAC for its sporting program.

?Our education here encouraged us to express our talents,? Ian said.

Joining the Chappell brothers at the opening were a host of old scholars including SANFL Hall of Famer Gordon Schwartz and Sturt Football Club CEO Matt Benson, while Melbourne Demons captain Jack Trengove recorded a message for the opening in his absence.

?It is a pity that I am not still at school to use these facilities,? Trengove joked.

?They are going to be a wonderful addition to helping boys develop their skills in a whole range of sports.?

The new RED Centre includes four multipurpose courts, a function centre, two indoor pools, weights rooms, sports science facilities and re-surfaced squash courts as well as a PAC Hall of Fame honouring past students? sporting achievements.

Current head of sport at the school Gary Jenkinson described the renovation as world-class.

?I think it?s a wonderful addition to our co-curricular sports program and it is great to have so many successful Old Reds like the Chappells come back to support it,? Jenkinson said.

?It gives kids the opportunity to hone their sporting skills in a state-of-the-art facility and it is a great way of enhancing the school?s great sporting tradition and reputation.?

In a further boost to the school?s sporting curriculum, Jenkinson was also pleased to announce the school?s appointment of Olympic swim coach Peter Bishop to run a new learn to swim program, which would be open to the public.

?We?ve had a few years of having to do without [the pool facilities] and the water polo and swim programs have deteriorated a little as a result,? Jenkinson said.

?But now we?ve got the new heated pool as well as new instructors to help our swim team prosper.?

The RED Centre is now open for all students, with plans to allow old scholars after hours use in the near future.

Von Trier's hotly-awaited Nymphomaniac film gets December launch

CANNES (Reuters) - Danish filmmaker Lars Von Trier's "Nymphomaniac", one of the most hotly anticipated movies of 2013 for its erotic content and all-star cast, will open in theatres on Christmas Day, the producers said on Thursday.

The provocative director, expelled from the Cannes film festival in 2011 for joking that he sympathized with Hitler, cast Charlotte Gainsbourg as the self-diagnosed nymphomaniac of the title, alongside rising Hollywood star Shia LaBeouf.

Uma Thurman and Willem Dafoe also appear in a movie which, if the pre-release buildup is to be believed, could match Von Trier's ultra-violent "Antichrist" for shocking audiences.

"December is a good month. Besides, what's more Christmassy than a film like this?" joked production company Zentropa's CEO Peter Aalbaek Jensen in a statement.

He added that Von Trier, 57, had just begun editing the second part of what will be a double bill, and promised impressive visual effects.

The film will premiere in Copenhagen in early December with a red carpet gala, and reach cinemas on December 25.

There had been intense speculation that the picture would be ready for this year's Cannes, where director Thierry Fremaux told Reuters Von Trier would be welcomed back in the future despite his ignominious exit two years ago.

It was the first such expulsion from the world's top film festival in 64 years, and an apology from the director, once a darling in Cannes and winner of the Palme d'Or award in 2000 for "Dancer in the Dark", proved too late.

Strasburg goes 8 to beat hometown Padres 6-2

SAN DIEGO (AP) ? Stephen Strasburg had quite the homecoming.

Pitching in front of about 50 family members and friends, Strasburg lasted a career-high eight innings against his hometown Padres to snap a seven-start winless streak, and Bryce Harper and Adam LaRoche homered to lead the Washington Nationals to a 6-2 victory against San Diego on Thursday night.

"It's easy pitching in front of a lot of loved ones," Strasburg said. "It's just another place to me, to be honest. It's my hometown. I'm an Aztec. But I look forward to pitching anyplace in the big leagues. It's kind of a dream come true."

Strasburg's 54th big league start was his first professional appearance at Petco Park. The big right-hander went to high school in suburban Santee and pitched for Hall of Famer Tony Gwynn at San Diego State before the Nationals took him with the first overall pick in the 2009 amateur draft. He pitched twice at Petco Park for SDSU.

"I heard a lot of 'Welcome home' and a lot of 'Go Aztecs' out there. It's great. I'm just glad they remembered me."

He allowed two runs, one earned, on three hits while striking out four and walking three. He got the final out of the eighth on his 117th pitch.

Strasburg had never thrown a pitch in the eighth inning of a big league start until he faced Everth Cabrera on Thursday night.

Strasburg said he had been looking forward to "just getting deep in the ballgame, getting used to that, getting into the routine of how you're body's going to feel the next day and learning how to recover and getting ready to doing it again."

Strasburg (2-5) had gone seven innings 10 times, including three this year.

He said he was happy manager Davey Johnson let him go back out for the eighth.

"I'm just glad he wasn't waiting for me at the top step after the seventh," Strasburg said. "I went out there in the eighth and I got the first out and it was like, 'All right, so this is what it feels like. I trust Davey's judgment and obviously he saw that my stuff was still there. He had the trust in me to go out there and get it done."

Strasburg was supposed to pitch at Petco Park last year but a rainout pushed that start back.

"I thought he pitched a heck of a ballgame," Johnson said. "It was the first time he's ever gone eight innings. It was a good homecoming for him. I liked it. I didn't think he was as sharp as he usually is, but it was a good ballgame. It was nice to see some offense coming up to give him some run support."

Strasburg earned his first victory since beating Miami on opening day.

In Strasburg's only other appearance against the Padres, he lasted just four innings in a 6-1 loss at Washington on May 15, 2012.

Strasburg held the Padres scoreless through four innings and allowed only one run in the fifth despite loading the bases with one out.

"He kept the ball down for the most part," San Diego's Yonder Alonso said. "We had the bases loaded there and we couldn't get it done."

Harper, back in the lineup three nights after running full-on into the scoreboard in right field at Dodger Stadium, hit a monster shot estimated at 431 feet to straightaway center field on the first pitch he saw from Tyson Ross with two outs in the seventh. Harper's homer nearly reached the base of the batter's eye. It was his 11th.

Harper's violent collision with the wall at Dodger Stadium left the 20-year-old slugger with 11 stitches in his chin and a sore body. Harper said he felt a little better but his whole left side was still sore. He played left field and batted third.

LaRoche hit a two-run homer into the sandy play area beyond the fence in right-center off Edinson Volquez (3-4) with one out in the fourth for a 2-0 lead. It was his fifth.

The Nationals added three runs off Volquez in the fifth, on a two-run single by Ryan Zimmerman and an RBI single by Steve Lombardozzi.

Volquez allowed five runs and five hits in five innings, struck out seven and walked four.

San Diego's Jedd Gyorko led off the fifth with a double that caromed off the base of the stands in left and Alexi Amarista walked. With one out, pinch-hitter Kyle Blanks hit a sharp grounder to third baseman Ryan Zimmerman, whose throw to second sailed over Steve Lombardozzi for an error that loaded the bases. Everth Cabrera's groundout brought in a run before Strasburg struck out Will Venable.

"He worked his way out of that jam," Padres manager Bud Black said. "We tried to get a little closer. He made a couple of pitches to minimize the damage and that got him through the middle part of the game."

Chris Denorfia hit a sacrifice fly in the sixth.

NOTES: Heisman Trophy winner Johnny Manziel of Texas A&M, known as "Johnny Football," threw out the ceremonial first pitch. He put a football twist on it by dropping back, scrambling and tossing it to Mark Kotsay, who caught it behind his back. Manziel also took two rounds of batting practice, with mixed results. The bat went flying out of his hands on his first swing, but he later hit a ball off the right-field wall at Petco Park. Manziel took BP while wearing loafers. ... Manziel is in town to work with quarterbacks coach George Whitfield Jr. "He came out here last year as a third-stringer and now he comes out here as a Heisman Trophy winner," Whitfield said. ... Manziel and Padres RHP Burch Smith have known each other since they were kids growing up in Tyler, Texas. Manziel said Smith once pulled a prank on him by locking him a batting cage. ... Johnson, who also went to Texas A&M, chatted up Manziel during batting practice. ... Manziel threw out the ceremonial first pitch before a game between the Texas Rangers and Los Angeles Angels. ... Padres LF Carlos Quentin missed the game to be with his wife, Jeane, who gave birth to their first son, Clark.

Individual Investors And The Terrible, Horrible, No Good, Very Bad ...

I have always had an affinity for children?s books. In fact, so much so, I think my mother was still reading me Where the Wild Things Are by Maurice Sendak when I was in middle school. Go ahead -- make fun of me. But the book that constitutes the title of this article reminded me that I?m having a... Terrible, Horrible, No Good, Very Bad Day.

The truth of the matter is, I recently wrote an article titled Don?t Stop Believing in US Equities, primarily because I truly believe that longer term, there are certain dynamics in place that support the potential for a secular bull market, akin to the recent 30-year run in bonds. These dynamics are:?

1. Aging global populations.

2. Ten thousand baby boomers?retiring per day?in the US -- boomers?who have been hand-fed stock data and market color via a 24/7 deluge from media outlets, that is.

3. The relative lack of yield or income to support these people, or ?the yield grab.? ?This poses the question: Will income-oriented equities be the core of most portfolios??

4. The massive change in the capital structures of corporate balances sheets as companies continue to lock in cheap/long-term financing in order to retire higher-yielding debt and give back to shareholders via massive equity buybacks and dividends, and/or dividend increases. Revenues in general, may not be growing robustly from an organic perspective, but the change in capital structure could serve to offset that factor for some time to come, as buybacks reduce stock floats and buoy bottom-line earnings. David Goldman, a brilliant macro strategist, recently pointed out that, ?All-in corporate yields of 2.7% (for the Bank of America/Merrill Lynch Index) mean that the cost of carrying corporate debt is the lowest on record, down from 40% of cash flow in the early 2000s to a projected 13% by the end of 2015."

5. Finally, as rates creep higher -- mainly in relation to the most recent smoke signals being sent by the Federal Reserve -- and duration begins to take an adverse effect on bond portfolios, we may in fact start to see the ?Great Rotation? ?(out of bonds into stocks). David ?Dr.? Tepper alluded to this fact recently in his CNBC rant in support of being long stocks. As a result, that same day, Dow theorists were dancing in the streets as the Dow Jones Industrial Average (INDEXDJX:.DJI) reached a new all-time high at 15,215.25, and, this new high was confirmed by a new all -time high for the Dow Jones Transportation Average (INDEXDJX:DJT), which climbed 121.78 to 6465.78, keeping the potential for a secular bull market intact. ?

However, I?m a bit bummed out today. Todd Harrison recently wrote a very cogent article titled The Most-Hated Rally of All Time. Todd and many others are talking about the fact that underneath the surface of the explosive rally we have seen across most markets, people just do not feel that good. This rally has been inspired mainly by monetary policy, the likes of which this global economy has never seen. I sat down at my computer one morning this week and was made aware of more layoffs in the financial service sector. On a personal level, these particular layoffs hit me hard. I will admit that by virtue of working in financial services for the better part of 19 years, my perspective may seem a bit skewed, or myopic to some. But with every passing week, I learn of another peer, contact, or friend who has been affected by the commoditization of trading and consequent lower commission rates, the compressed margins financial service companies are dealing with from both a primary and secondary standpoint, and the effects of increased regulation as Dodd/Frank and Basel III take effect in earnest. ?

I ask readers to please not misconstrue what I?m trying to convey. Changes in marketplace structure, low-cost trading vehicles, and financial products are necessary and, overall, good for the investing public. Throughout history, all industries have gone through dynamic changes, resulting in margin compression and consolidation. I?m just trying to convey that the changes taking place affect many on a personal level, which is a great segue to my next point: The underlying economic recovery that has taken place in general is not making people feel a whole lot better.

First on the topic of jobs, we can look at the most recent non-farm payroll numbers and glean that under the surface there?s some caveats that make the gains seem hollow. Delving a bit deeper into the report, we see that Americans worked less in April than in March. The drop in average weekly hours (from 34.8 to 34.6) for all private employees outweighed the 165,000 increase in the headline jobs number. According to the survey, weekly hours worked totaled 4.683 billion in April vs. 4.704 billion in March. The increase in employment combined with lower hours worked probably reflects an increase in poor quality jobs -- a shift in hiring in low-wage industries (retail and hospitality) to reduce the cost of health and other benefits. ?In essence, goods-producing employment fell, which is not a good sign. Moreover, we know the unemployment rate has been trickling lower, but this is due in part to many Americans dropping out of the workforce, or saying, ?I give up.?

In response to this, some will say, "But look at my portfolio! Stocks are going to the moon. Housing is improving. And the Fed seems to be remaining accommodative." Yes, that is true, but that?s if in fact one is actually invested or continuing to invest at all. Again, in general terms, many people are not benefiting from the rally in stocks and bonds at all. The truth is that the dynamic of lower-quality jobs being created also offers fewer benefits. In general, people are paying more for health care, making less money, and less is being contributed to 401(k) plans and IRAs on both corporate and personal levels. Just yesterday, Gallup released the results from a study that asked Americans the following question:??Do you, personally, or jointly with a spouse, have any money invested in the stock market right now ? either and individual stock, a stock mutual fund, or in a self-directed 401(k) or IRA?"

The results showed 52% responded yes, 47% responded no, and 1% had no opinion. To put that result into context, it?s the lowest reading since the poll was first conducted in September 1998. Moreover, at the last market peak, in 2007, 65% of respondents answered yes to having stock exposure. Now, again, although I?m having a "terrible, horrible, no good, very bad day,? this low reading can be construed as a positive, as market tops are typically defined by the odd lot theory or retail panic into markets. This most recent Gallup poll tells us the most recent rally has been institutional in nature.

As far as real estate is concerned, there is no denying that the housing market is improving; 70% of Americans own a home. I have reached out to many industry experts on both the commercial and residential side with questions. The general message has been that there?s still a long way to go up.

Depressed markets in Florida, Nevada, and Arizona are still recording double-digit gains, and housing prices overall are up 8% year over year. However, the caveat here is that most of the buying to this point has again been at the institutional level, as the big homebuilders spent most of their time at the lows of the cycle acquiring land and permits and are now benefitting as the cycle begins to turn. Just recently, the NAHB Index rang in at 44 vs. a survey result of 41. We know that 50+ signals expansion, so there?s still a ways to go to even get to equilibrium. Most origination to this point has been flipping foreclosures, or the larger institutional players buying distressed properties and sitting on the purchases by renting them. Just now they?re starting to sell. On a personal level, we know that credit remains tight, and overall, potential buyers are having a hard time getting a loan. Moreover, the loan process is as cumbersome as ever, and appraisals as well are creating a lot of issues. These dynamics need to ease a bit for the positive trend to continue, or so one would think. So again, to this point, the rally in real estate has been primarily beneficial for the larger institutions, and therefore the benefits are being felt less at the individual level. ?

Conclusively, I?m far from a Debbie Downer. I?m a glass-half-full fella. Overall, the economy is improving; the stock market and housing market are soaring. But there are also reminders on a daily basis that underneath the surface, a different story can exist. We continue to see collateral damage that has resulted from the fragile recovery underpinning this massive rally in most asset classes. So in the book Alexander and the Terrible, Horrible, No Good, Very Bad Day, we know it?s a Murphy?s Law day for Alexander. ?From the moment he wakes up, things go wrong -- gum gets stuck in his hair; he trips on the skateboard and drops his sweater into the sink while the water is running; at school his teacher does not like the picture he drew. But in the end, young Alexander is reminded by his mother that ?everybody has bad days, even people who live in Australia.? ?We also know that although it may seem a bit trite, there?s another side to every story and?we must stay cognizant of it. ?????????????????????????????????????????????

No positions in stocks mentioned.

'Eclipse Series 38: Masaki Kobayashi Against the System' | PopMatters

Postwar

Masaki Kobayashi rose to prominence directing films that exposed and criticized the failings of Japan and its power structures during and immediately following World War II. His great three-part war epic The Human Condition (1961) details the moral trials and gradual dissolution of a soldier and administrator in Manchuria. Criterion is following up their superb box set of this film with a collection of Kobayashi?s work from the same period, via their Eclipse line, called Masaki Kobayashi Against the System. The four movies included chart Kobayashi?s growth as a filmmaker while revealing some of the faults of the cynical yet earnest approach of his early efforts.

Kobayashi worked for Shochiku studios, known for producing modest and understated family melodramas and comedies. Though he fought with the studio by breaking out of their mold and creating the types of movies he and not they wanted to make, he always maintained a commitment to realism that was important to the studio.

But this was a hardened ?50s noir realism, of a type that was being adopted by filmmakers around the world to depict postwar life. One can see it in Elia Kazan, The Third Man, the Italian Neorealists, British kitchen sink dramas, and cynical comedy-dramas like The Sweet Smell of Success. These movies use real locations and can be grimy and fragile with a modesty (often due to meager postwar financing) that seems to sneer at the epic excesses of the war they left behind. Oftentimes there is a creative tension between wanting to capture a documentary sense of reality and the expressionist visuals used to capture the characters? psychological reality.

The Thick-Walled Room (1956)

Kobayashi?s movies share with the above films a strong sense of a person and a society trying to work through some heavy trauma. His first breakthrough film, The Thick-Walled Room (completed in 1953, but it?s release was delayed until 1956) is remarkable as a rebellious outcry against Japan?s war leaders. The script is ?based on the writings of B- and C- class war criminals? and focuses on a group of cellmates in a prison overseen by American occupation forces.

As revealed through a series of at times abstract flashbacks, the soldiers were imprisoned for crimes that they were forced to commit by their superiors, who have gone unpunished. These flashbacks pull the narrative outside the prison into the wider world, using the prisoners? stories to show the wartime experiences of confused, desperate peoples across a wide swathe of Eastern Asia. These portrayals of the complicated national and ethnic power dynamics of war make it a clear progenitor to Kobayashi?s ambitions with The Human Condition.?

Though a bit uneven in its pacing and with some technical imperfections, The Thick-Walled Room has a tremendous power that increases as the film progresses; there is a pervasive sense of terror and vulnerability, which climaxes when Yamashita (Torahiko Hamada), released for one day to attend his mother?s funeral, threatens to murder his old commanding officer. Japan appears to be almost totally destitute and beat up, the prisoners can be seen as stand-ins for Japanese society at large, paying for the sins of their leaders, at the whim of the American victors. A village girl turned Tokyo prostitute succinctly says, ?The war drove everyone insane. We?re still insane, you know??

It would be several years before Kobayashi was allowed to direct another personal picture. I Will Buy You (1956), as the grip-you-by-the-throat title implies, attacks the emergence of cutthroat capitalism in postwar life, specifically within professional baseball. The anti-hero is the slick, young, ambitious talent scout Daisuke Kishimoto (Keiji Sada). We first see him chasing down an ace pitcher. But when he finds out he has lost a finger in a mining accident, we never hear about the pitcher again. Daisuke turns his attention to Goro Kurita (Minoru Ooki), a seemingly innocent college player who reveals a sharp streak once a bidding war breaks out between the major pro teams.

Kobayashi depicts a world where everyone ? coaches, wives, blood relatives, country farmers ? are out to use each other for the most gain. It opens and closes with chirpy depictions of a wholesome baseball game then fills out the middle with gambling, horse racing, sumo wrestling, and dogfights. There is perpetual talk of money and a constant threat of violence, Kobayashi films cars passing by like they?re about to mow down pedestrians. When someone criticizes Daisuke he exclaims, ?But it?s my profession. I can?t stop.?

This movie is overtly cynical, but there is a thing as too much cynicism and too often the temptation when taking this kind of approach is to offer redemption through an equally exaggerated wide-eyed moral purity. Daisuke undergoes a moral awakening prompted by Kurita?s heart-of-gold sweetheart. But it is not very convincing and frankly not as fun as the maneuverings of the agents.

Black River (1956) is undoubtedly the standout of this set and what I would consider Kobayashi?s first great film. It appropriates noir stylizations, and has a fierce tightness in its pacing, framings, and script that are lacking in the other films. Set in a sleazy bars and brothel community on the outskirts of a U.S. military base, it captures a unique milieu and moment in history as it was unfolding.

As in The Thick-Walled Room, the Americans are an anonymous, bullying presence on the periphery of the characters? lives. The Japan portrayed here has been brought to a low point of postwar poverty, self-destructive with a petty criminal-minded approach to survival. But Kobayashi gives all of the characters a degree of humanity that exceeds their cynicism. The two leads (Ineko Arima and Fumio Watanabe) are innocent lovers (at times too pure) resisting the criminal rackets of their squalid home. But the standout characters are the two villains, a small-time pimp named ?Killer Joe? (Tatsuya Nakadai in his breakout role) and shantytown landlady (Isuzu Yamada) who conspire together. Though evil in their actions, the actors have a wonderful ability to capture the desperate amateurs trembling underneath their characters? showy facades.

The Inheritance (1962), the final movie in this set, was released after the Human Condition. It?s notable as a placeholder before Kobayashi directed a series of samurai and historical dramas in the ?60s (Harakiri, Kwaidan, Samurai Rebellion) for which he is perhaps best known.

The Inheritance takes place in a world of rapidly accumulating wealth, opening with the main character Yasuko Miyagawa (Keiko Kishi) window shopping for jewelry. The movie is told through a long flashback. At a fashionable restaurant Yasuko tells a lawyer of how she, as secretary, managed to inherit the riches of her wealthy boss over the machinations of his wife, business associates, and illegitimately conceived children.

The story of how she does it sounds more interesting than its portrayal, which is a bit lead-footed despite some jazzy stylizations and the wicked cattiness of the main characters. Here Kobayashi allows his air of cynicism to acquire an element of (seemingly intentional) camp. But humor was never his strong suit, and he?s not able to bring off the brisk verve required to make the wicked satire snap. The film is most interesting in how Kobayashi portrays this world of riches, which seems to have been created by the main characters embracing shallow materialism as a way to escape the poverty and psychological stress of the ?50s portrayed in his earlier films.

In Black River and The Thick-Walled Room, Kobayashi offers a more nuanced and hopeful promise for Japanese society. In the final shot of Room the prisoners are shown walking down the hallway of their prison together; in Black River the tenants of the landlady?s building fight back against its destruction. Neither movie offers anything like a confident vote for humanity, but in showing how a group of people can band together to try and form a just and compassionate community, there lies a sense of hope stronger than any surface cynicism.
