Kailua hosts Independence Day parade

KAILUA, OAHU (HawaiiNewsNow) -

Throngs of people crammed along Kainalu Drive in Kailua to watch the town's 67th annual Independence Day parade.

The parade kicked off at 10am, and featured the state's top political dignitaries, several military and veterans groups, multiple musical acts, and vehicles and floats of all sizes.

Colleen Porter traveled from the Big Island to visit friends. "It's pretty amazing, that people can come out on a street like this, and mesh" said Porter.

Dan Bilodeau and family traveled from much farther away: Canada. The gravity of the day, and the celebration, not lost on him. "It's celebrating, it's being united, it's freedom, it's all that."

The parade was just the beginning of the festivities in Kailua. The town was set to host a fireworks display starting at 8pm, thanks to a generous private donation that helped Kailua meet its fundraising goal.
