Jackson Memorial ranked No. 1 hospital in South Florida

Jackson Memorial Hospital, the centerpiece of Miami-Dade?s public hospital system, was ranked the No. 1 hospital in South Florida in a survey released Tuesday by U.S. News & World Report.

The magazine, which ranked the combined entity of ?University of Miami-Jackson Memorial Medical Center?? No. 2 last year, rated hospitals in Miami and Fort Lauderdale based on their number of nationally ranked specialties and their number of high-performing specialties. The rankings also factored quality of care, patient safety and physicians? opinions of a hospital?s reputation in a community.

Baptist Hospital of Miami was ranked No. 2 in the region this year, while South Miami Hospital fell to third from last year?s top rank. Mount Sinai Medical Center in Miami Beach ranked fourth in the region, and Cleveland Clinic Florida in Weston was fifth.

Carlos Migoya, chief executive of Jackson Health System, which includes the Jackson Memorial campus in Miami?s Civic Center and satellite hospitals in North Miami Beach and South Miami-Dade, credited the hospital?s partnership with the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine for helping to achieve national recognition.

In fact, Jackson Memorial?s only nationally ranked specialty is ophthalmology, which is provided by the Bascom Palmer Eye Institute at the University of Miami, which ranked first in the nation for eye care this year ? the tenth consecutive year of achieving that distinction.

The UM/Jackson entity also was recognized as ?high-performing?? ? meaning in the top 25 percent nationally ? in cancer treatment, gastroenterology and GI surgery, nephrology, neurology and neurosurgery, psychiatry and urology.

Migoya said in a written statement. ?Whether for everyday emergencies or life-threatening conditions, patients across Miami-Dade and around the world choose Jackson for compassionate, world-class care.??

At Bascom Palmer Eye Institute, which also provides ophthalmology care for the Miami VA Healthcare System, Dr. Eduardo Alfonso, a UM professor of ophthalmology and chairman of Bascom Palmer, credited the tireless work of ophthalmologists, vision researchers, nurses and other healthcare staff for the consistent national recognition as tops in its field.

?There are things that happen here that support patient care in a very strong way, and that?s our research and our academic mission,?? Alfonso said. ?All of our doctors are also engaged in cutting-edge research in their specific areas of expertise. So they?re always looking for, ?How can we do this better?? And that question is asked every day in everything we do.??

Dr. Pascal Goldschmidt, dean of the UM Miller School of Medicine, said being ranked No. 1 in ophthalmology by the magazine ?never gets old.??

?Every year, we are expecting the results with great anticipation, and we never take it as a fait accompli,?? he said.

Among hospitals in Florida, UM/Jackson was ranked No. 6 overall, tied with Sarasota Memorial Hospital. Baptist Hospital of Miami ranked No. 9 in the state. Florida Hospital in Orlando ranked first in the state.

The UM/Jackson partnership at Holtz Children?s Hospital also had six nationally ranked pediatric specialties, including No. 22 in gastroenterology, GI surgery and nephrology, No. 32 in neonatology,and No. 38 in urology.

The other South Florida hospitals in the top 10 were Doctor?s Hospital at No. 6; Broward General Medical Center at No. 7; Memorial Hospital West at No. 8, and Boca Raton Regional Hospital at No. 9. Four hospitals were tied for No. 10: Holy Cross Hospital in Fort Lauderdale; Homestead Hospital; Memorial Regional Hospital in Hollywood, and University of Miami Hospital.

Among children?s hospitals, Miami Children?s Hospital led the region with 10 nationally ranked pediatric specialties, including No. 10 for neurology and neurosurgery; No. 18 for pulmonology; and No. 21 in neonatology.
