U.S. panel backs lung cancer screening for high-risk groups

By Julie Steenhuysen

CHICAGO (Reuters) - After decades of debate, an influential U.S. panel has endorsed the use of low-dose CT scans to detect lung cancer in high-risk individuals, paving the way for insurance coverage of the test for as many as 10 million smokers and former smokers.

The draft guidelines issued on Monday by the U.S. Preventive Services Task Force call for annual CT screening of current and former smokers aged 55 to 80 with a history of smoking the equivalent of a pack a day for 30 years, or two packs a day for 15 years. The recommendation applies to those who have quit smoking within the past 15 years.

The panel gave the screening a "B" recommendation, meaning they are at least moderately certain that the benefits of testing outweigh the harms. Under the Affordable Care Act, insurers are required to cover preventive services with a grade of "B" or higher.

The recommendations, posted on the task force website, are intended to help prevent some of the 160,000 annual lung cancer deaths in the United States, which exceed the total number of deaths from breast, prostate and colon cancer combined. Smoking is the biggest risk factor for developing lung cancer, resulting in about 85 percent of lung cancers in the United States.

Dr. Michael LeFevre of the University of Missouri in Columbia, who served on the task force, said "getting screened for lung cancer is not an alternative to quitting smoking," but he said screening high-risk smokers can prevent as many as 20,000 deaths a year.

Laurie Fenton Ambrose of the Lung Cancer Alliance, a group that has long advocated for lung cancer screening, said if approved in final form, the guidelines would represent a "profound" and "monumental moment."

The guidelines largely fall in line with recommendations from most major groups of cancer experts, including the American Cancer Society and the American Society of Clinical Oncology.

But some doctors worry the rating might lead to overdiagnosis and overtreatment of cancers, in much the same way that widespread screening programs for breast and prostate cancers have done.

PROPOSED GUIDELINES

The proposed guidelines are based on a review of research studies published since 2004, the time of the group's last review. The evidence review was published in the Annals of Internal Medicine.

Some of the strongest evidence came from the National Lung Screening Test, the largest-ever lung cancer screening study that in 2011 found CT screening cuts deaths from lung cancer.

The federally funded trial, which studied 53,000 current or former heavy smokers, found that CT scanning cut lung cancer deaths in high-risk smokers by 20 percent compared to no screening or to chest X-rays, which often miss early-stage cancers.

Dr. Clifford Hudis, president of the American Society of Clinical Oncology, said the draft recommendations reflect the positions of several cancer groups.

"I think they are catching up to the science," said Hudis, adding, "We agree with them."

Of course, using a highly sensitive test like a CT scan to look for early signs of lung cancer will undoubtedly result in high rates of false positives. The NLST found that 320 high-risk smokers had to be screened to prevent one lung cancer death.

Because of that, and the potential risk from annual exposure to radiation from the CT scans, LeFevre stressed that the screening should only be used in the high-risk groups specified by the guidelines.

"We believe the benefits do outweigh the harms in the group we have targeted for screening. We are not sure of that for those of lower risk, either by age or smoking history," he said.

OVERDIAGNOSIS

The National Lung Screening Trial showed that for every five to six lives saved by screening, one person died as a result of post-screening procedures, such as a needle biopsy that collapsed their lung.

Dr. Peter Bach, director of Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center's Center for Health Policy and Outcomes, who has studied the impact of lung cancer screening said with the new guidelines, "overdiagnosis is guaranteed."

Bach said he hopes doctors will view the "B" rating as an indication that the recommendation was weak. "They are not telling people you have to do it," he said.

LeFevre said it is very important that doctors follow up tests with imaging first, rather than invasive procedures.

"Most of the abnormalities found on CT scan are not cancer, but they do lead to further testing. That is why it is important to limit this to the high-risk group," he said.

Dr. Kenneth Lin, an associate professor of family medicine at Georgetown University School of Medicine and formerly on the staff of the U.S. Preventive Service Task Force, said there is still not enough good data on the issue of overdiagnosis, which will make it difficult to counsel patients on whether to have the test or not.

"If a patient came to me asking for screening and if he/she didn't meet the criteria, I'd simply say 'no'," Lin said in emailed comments.

If patients did meet the criteria, Lin said he would press for more details on the patients potential risk for lung cancer and if the patient is still smoking, offer counseling about the need to stop.

"Then I'd explain the uncertainty regarding the harms and only order the test if they expressed a clear preference for it after all that," he said.

What worries LeFevre and others is that some doctors and hospitals will try to profit from screening, which costs a few hundred dollars a test.

"We hope that physicians will not use this recommendation to exaggerate the benefits of screening," he said.

The task force is expected to decide whether to make the recommendation final sometime after August 26 when the public comment period ends.

(This story has been corrected to make it clear that the guidelines were posted on task force website)

Make Your Business Trip Or Vacation More Relaxing With These ...

Travel can be a wondrous experience. No really, it can be. In terms of traveling to a new location and experiencing new people, culture, and food, it is truly a thing of wonder. To start learning some basics as to how to make a plan that works for you, refer to the tips below.

Pack all your necessary belongings in a carry-on bag for airline travel. Not having to check luggage means that you can save on checked bag fees, check in for your flight at home or at a kiosk without having to wait in line a the ticket counter, and will avoid the possibility of your luggage being lost.

Take an extra debit card with you while traveling. Things sometimes get lost on long trips. If you can, keep an extra debit card handy. Having too much cash on hand is often a bad idea. An extra debit card is much less risky and far easier to keep track of.

Before you travel internationally, learn where your country's embassies and consulates are in your destination country. These are not resources for the casual traveler. Hopefully you will never need them. If you find yourself in legal trouble, though, consulates and embassies can provide vital assistance in navigating unfamiliar and unfriendly legal waters.

Jogging at a rest stop, while on a road trip, is a fast way to wake up, relieve stiffness from your limbs and prepare yourself for the next leg of your journey. Instead of simply walking around and maybe going to the bathroom, include a five minute jog at the rest stop. Simply getting out of the car may not sufficiently revive a weary driver, which may leave him or her still sleepy when on return. A quick run can also give children an opportunity to release some pent-up energy.

If you are traveling and planning to wash laundry in your hotel room, set up your drying line somewhere with a good breeze, preferably in front of a fan. In areas with extremely high humidity, your laundry will not dry quickly enough to avoid developing a smell unless there is also air movement.

If you need to use the bathroom during a long flight, please make sure to put your shoes on when entering the restroom. You never know what kind of germs can be on the floor of the plane, especially near the commode. When you return to your seat, feel free to kick your shoes off.

Try to purchase tickets to amusement parks in advance so that you could print them out. The small fee per ticket for this service is well worth it when you consider the lines that you can avoid. If the park you are visiting has a timed entry, you can skip admission lines too.

Making the necessary preparations will make a big difference before a trip. These preparations range from ensuring that one has packed everything that is needed to using the bathroom before leaving the house. Having everything prepared and in place before traveling will give one more time to relax and enjoy themselves.

Travelling by plane can be a way to greatly reduce traveling time, while increasing time that can be spent enjoying the trip. Also, you are free to entertain yourself while the pilots and other staff take care of everything. You can sit back and enjoy the flight, while traveling in comfort.

As you plan your vacation, don't be shy about using your frequent flyer miles for a wide variety of traveling perks. Stockpiling your miles isn't a good idea, because no one knows if they will be worth anything in the future. Go ahead and trade them in for a free flight or anything else that would make your traveling experience a little easier.

Check the weather for your destination prior to packing. You are sure to be able to find the information about the weather on the internet and it will help you to pack a little lighter. Many airlines will charge for luggage that weighs too much so only take what you need with you for your trip.

As stated above, traveling can be easy as long as you are well informed. Now that you are equipped with theses tips about traveling you will hopefully keep them in mind for the next time you travel. Remember, the only way that traveling can be stress-free is if you allow it to be.

Israel Cabinet OKs draft referendum bill

By Edmund Sanders

Los Angeles Times

Published: July 28, 2013

JERUSALEM -- Hoping to appease right-wing lawmakers opposed to restarting Palestinian peace talks, Israel?s coalition government Sunday approved a draft bill that would require --? if passed by the Knesset -- that a proposed deal be approved by voters in a referendum.

?It is important that every citizen have a direct vote on fateful decisions such as these that will determine the future of the state,?? said Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.

Netanyahu put the measure before his Cabinet on Sunday in an attempt to soften opposition to a more controversial agenda item to release 104 Palestinian prisoners as a concession to lure Palestinians back to the negotiating table.?

The referendum bill -- which was sought by the nationalist Jewish Home party -- will be introduced as a so-called Basic Law, which is roughly comparable in Israel to constitutional law in the U.S. Israel has no constitution, but Basic Laws are intended to secure basic rights and trump other laws.

A similar referendum law was passed in 2010, but it was not a Basic Law and is currently being challenged in court.

Passage of a referendum Basic Law could face difficulties in the Knesset. Some lawmakers fear that requiring a referendum puts another obstacle in the way of reaching a deal with Palestinians, particularly one that requires Israel to give up territory seized in 1967 or evacuate West Bank settlements.

Others say using the referendum process sets a bad precedent for Israel?s democracy, warning it will open the door to using referendums on many other issues, such as reducing the military or expanding settlements. They insist such matters are better left to the elected representatives.

Indian Army tracks suspected Chinese drones, discovers they're just planets

According to a recent report, the Indian Army monitored two unidentified objects for six months, suspecting that they could have been Chinese drones ? before learning they were actually just planets. The Telegraph reports that the army started tracking the two objects near the border of India and China back in August of 2012, noting certain patterns of behavior: one object appeared regularly at around 6PM local time and stayed visible until 5AM the following morning, while the other was visible between 4AM and 11AM.

By February of this year, 329 sightings had been logged, with the objects appearing to cross over into Indian territory 155 times. Given the escalating tensions and concern about unmanned aerial vehicles in the region, astronomers from the Indian Institute of Astrophysics were brought in. "Our task was to determine whether these unidentified objects were celestial or terrestrial," Tushar Prabhu, a senior astronomer with the Institute, told The Telegraph. Soldiers measured the horizontal angle and vertical elevation of the objects over a period of several days, after which the data was processed by the Institute. Tracking the motion and timing of the appearances led to the conclusion that the soldiers had actually been observing Jupiter and Venus all along.

While the mistake may seem absurd on its face, according to the astronomers the confusion wasn't unwarranted. Due to the altitude, both planets would have been the brightest objects in the sky, and as they rose in the east they would have been perceived by the soldiers to be moving across the border as observed.

Google's Hangouts 1.1.1 for Android Brings New Emoji

A new flavor of the Google Hangouts application is now available for download for the owners of Android-based devices, namely version 1.1.1 (build 753199).

Up for grabs for all smartphones and tablet PCs running under Android 2.3 or newer, the application now packs some more emoji. Various bug fixes have been included inside the new app flavor as well, it seems.

Furthermore, the app release comes with various performance enhancements. ?We added some butter to Hangouts to make it run faster and slicker,? Google notes.

Released as a replacement for Google Talk, the Hangouts for Android application was designed to provide users with a more appealing experience when engaging in one-on-one and group conversations, courtesy of support for photos and emoji, as well as due to free video calling capabilities.

Boy finds, returns woman's lost wedding ring

GENESEE COUNTY, MI (WNEM) -

A Genesee County woman is counting her blessings after she lost her wedding ring in a waterfall ? only to have it returned by an upstanding citizen.

"And I go, ?you're kidding me, oh my God no, you're kidding me'," said LeLonnie Alexander on the moment she was reunited with her wedding ring.

She lost it during a vacation in northern Michigan while at a waterfall, and figured it was gone for good. "I slipped and fell down into the water and I'm waving my hands back and forth ? and all of a sudden the ring flies off and I said, ?I lost my ring.'"

After a long search in the water, Alexander lost all hope of finding it. She?notified the campground area police department and posted about her lost ring on social media. Several days later, she received a phone call.

"I got a call and they asked me to describe my ring because they thought somebody had found it," said Alexander.

A boy all the way from Nashville, TN, heard about what had happened. When his family visited the waterfall while on vacation, he decided to search for the ring himself.

"He heard about the story and went into the water with his little snorkel and his mask," explained Alexander.

And he found the $4,000 ring.

This week his family returned it to Alexander. She says she can't thank the boy enough for his honesty. "I get goose bumps because that little boy deserves every bit of praise that he can get," gushed Alexander.

Now the ring holder says she's doing whatever she can to make sure she doesn't lose her ring ever again. "This baby's getting insured and resized," said Alexander.

Alexander?did give?the boy a $200 reward for returning her ring.

Pope scolds rich, demands social justice in visit to Brazil slum

By Philip Pullella and Anthony Boadle

RIO DE JANEIRO (Reuters) - Pope Francis on Thursday issued the first social manifesto of his young pontificate, telling slum dwellers in Brazil that the world's rich must do much more to wipe out vast inequalities between the haves and the have-nots.

The pope also urged Brazil's youth, who have taken part in recent protests showing discontent with the status quo, to keep alive their "sensitivity towards injustice" and be a catalyst in the fight against corruption.

The first Latin American pope, who has rallied the Church on behalf of the poor and who lives more austerely than his predecessors, called for a "culture of solidarity" to replace the "selfishness and individualism" prevailing in modern society.

"No one can remain insensitive to the inequalities that persist in the world," he told residents of Manguinhos, a sprawling shantytown, or favela, of ramshackle brick dwellings that until recently was overrun by violence and controlled by drug lords.

His speech, under rains that have persisted throughout most of his first trip abroad as pope, came halfway through a week-long visit around World Youth Day, a gathering of young Catholics that is expected to attract more than a million faithful to Rio de Janeiro and nearby sites.

Despite the downpours and unusually chilly weather, tens of thousands of rapturous Brazilians and foreign visitors have turned out to welcome the pope. The World Youth Day events are an effort by the Vatican to inspire Catholics at a time when rival denominations, secularism and sexual and financial scandals continue to lead some to abandon the Church.

Brazil, home to the world's biggest population of Catholics with over 120 million faithful, is an apt locale for the pope to remind the world of inequality. A recent decade of economic growth in the country raised incomes for many, but tens of millions of Brazilians still live in poverty or with little more than the basics to get by.

In Manguinhos, Francis, an Argentine known for frequent outings into the slums near Buenos Aires even as a cardinal, smiled and visibly enjoyed the chaotic close contact allowed with residents there. He called for more efforts to end poverty and said authorities must do more than just crack down on the drug trade to ensure opportunities for those at the bottom of the economic ladder.

"Everybody, according to his or her particular opportunities and responsibilities, should be able to make a personal contribution to putting an end to so many social injustices," he said in an address on a muddy, rain-drenched soccer field next to a river smelling of sewer water.

Making the speech after blessing the favela's small chapel and visiting one of its homes on a recently cleaned street, the pope challenged the rich and powerful to use their influence to enact lasting change.

"I would like to make an appeal to those in possession of greater resources, to public authorities and to all people of good will who are working for social justice: never tire of working for a more just world, marked by greater solidarity!" he said.

Reflecting his humble personal style, Francis said he would like to have been able to stop in every Brazilian home "to ask for a glass of cold water, to take a cafezinho, but not a shot of cacha?a," a mention of Brazilian rum that drew laughter from the crowd.

Driving in an open popemobile, Francis was surrounded by a throng of residents, some barefoot, and leaned out to kiss a woman and shake extended hands as he entered the slum, where there was a heavy presence of police and military.

'PACIFICATION' OF POOR NOT ENOUGH

The pope praised Brazil?s efforts over the last decade to reduce poverty in Latin America's largest nation, which last month was rocked by massive protests against corruption, the misuse of public money and the high cost of living.

But he said more needed to be done to bridge the gap between rich and poor at the root of social injustice, in a reference to the police occupation of Rio's slums started last year to "pacify" drug-related violence.

"No amount of 'pacification' will be able to last, nor will harmony and happiness be attained in a society that ignores, pushes to the margins or excludes a part of itself," he said.

Manguinhos, home to about 35,000 poor people, was known locally as "Gaza Strip" for its frequent shootings. It is one of the slums that have been part of a community policing operation that has reduced violence in the shantytowns of Rio de Janeiro.

"In those days, I never knew when I entered the church if I would be alive when I got out," said Father Marcio Queiroz, pastor of the local chapel. "It was like a fruit market but instead of selling fruit on the tables on the street there was guns, crack and other drugs."

At one end of the sports field where Francis spoke hung a huge painting of Archbishop Oscar Romero of San Salvador, who often denounced repression and poverty in his weekly homilies and was murdered by a right-wing death squad in 1980.

Francis has decided to unblock the beatification process for Romero, the penultimate step before Catholic sainthood.

From the slum, Francis traveled to Rio's modern cathedral, where he received a roaring welcome from tens of thousands of young people from his native country who were in Rio for the Catholic jamboree.

On Thursday evening he is to welcome participants in the World Youth Day from a stage on the crescent shaped Copacabana beach. More than one million people are expected for the event.

On Sunday, he presides at the close of World Youth Day in a pasture outside Rio before leaving for Rome that evening.

? low-self-esteem

Dear Sir,

I am 46 years old. My mail is not about Islam. It is about me. I have been mired in low self-esteem for the last 24 years, and my life is just slipping away, day by day, doing nothing. All my attempts to impose my will on my frailties have failed, and I have developed ?learned helplessness?.

I am very impressed with your writings. Can you help me?

Regards,
Anil

?

?

Hi Anil,

Low self-esteem is the root cause of many ills affecting us individually and socially.? Nathaniel Brandon, a pioneer in the field of self- esteem, in his book The Six Pillars of Self Esteem wrote, ?Apart from disturbance whose roots are biological, I cannot think of a single psychological problem?from anxiety and depression, to underachievement at school or at work, to fear of intimacy, happiness, or success, to alcohol or drug abuse, to spouse battering or child molestation, to co-dependency and sexual disorders, to passivity and chronic aimlessness, to suicide and crimes of violence?that is not traceable, at least in part, to the problem of deficient self-esteem. Of all the judgments we pass in life, none is as important as the one we pass on ourselves.?

I would go one step further and say that many of the mental disorders that are diagnosed as biological are psychosomatic in origin.? We affect our biology through our thoughts.? Much of the diseases, whether mental or physical are caused by our fears, worries, and are the products of our own thinking.

Every thought stimulates a gland or an organ and in response your body reacts.? Think of lemon juice and your mouth start salivating. Think of something fearful and your heart start beating faster; think of a funny thing and you start laughing; think a happy and joyous thought and your nerve cells start secreting dopamine, think of something erotic? and you become sexually aroused. Thoughts affect our body and our mind.

Predominant thoughts create permanent responses in our body and mind.? They eventually affect our body and our brain psychically.? Therefore, many mental and physical disorders are the result of our habitual negative thinking.? This also includes our sexual orientation.? Unlike what people believe today, no one is born a homosexual.? They become so as the result of thinking, which has its root in our infancy and childhood.

In the highest state of alertness, during the waking hours, the brain of an adult emits frequencies between 14-40 Hz. ?This is called Beta wave length. When we relax, with our eyes closed and slip into daydreaming our brain functions at 7.5 ? 14 Hz frequencies. This is called Alpha. ?During deep meditation and light sleep, including the all-important REM (Rapid Eye Movement) dream the brain frequency is dropped to 4 ? 7 Hz. This state is called Theta. And the brain frequency drops to 0.5 ? 4 Hz when we are in deep, dreamless sleep. This is Delta state.

A new brain frequency discovered recently is called Gamma. It is the fastest frequency at above 40 Hz.? While little is known about this state of mind, it is believed that it is associated with burst of insight and high-level information processing.

The brain of children below the age of five does not function at Beta frequency. When they are infants their brain functions with frequencies that are ranged as Theta and between the ages of 2-5 their brain activity reaches Alpha frequency.

The rational mind of an adult works with Beta frequency. The Alpha frequency is the realm of the subconscious mind. ?This means that children do not have a rational mind. ?We knew that already, however, the importance of this discovery is in the fact that now we know whatever we tell our children will be registered in their subconscious mind as programming. It becomes the blueprint of their life. ?Children don?t analyze what we tell them. In the first five years of their lives they download all the information that is fed to them whether consciously or subliminally.

After the age of five, the brain starts to function at Beta frequency.? Children start to be analytical and critical of the information they receive.? How? By sizing the mew information against the information that is already have programmed in their subconscious mind!? If the new information match the information with which they were programmed they accept it and if it does not, they reject it.

Whatever we do, from the age of 5 to 105 is the result of those five years of programming. So if in those five years you were told that you are not good enough, you are lazy, clumsy, will not amount to anything, etc. you will carry these beliefs as blueprint for the rest of your life.? Even when you grow up and become an educated person, you still have low self-esteem. Self-esteem has nothing to do with intelligence. You can be a very smart person and highly qualified. But you can?t become successful because every time the opportunity arises you feel inadequate and do not take advantage of it. You will in fact sabotage your chances in order to validate your beliefs about yourself.

As I said, our sexual orientation is also formed at this time. For some reason, we associate sexual gratification with a person of the same sex in childhood. This is done unconsciously. As we grow it becomes part of our personality.? Even our physiology responds to this expectation.

Propensity to addictions is also formed during these early years. Procrastination, eating disorders, failure to have friends and to form a loving relationship, failure to succeed in life and many traits that develop into mental disorders, such as narcissism, border line personality, depression, anxiety, paranoia, etc., are all the result of the childhood subconscious programming.? Most of them are byproducts of low self-esteem.? The seed is sown in childhood and the fruit matures when the individual reaches adulthood.

So what shall we do to improve our self-esteem? ?You can spend years going to psychologists who will help you undo the damage that is done to you in childhood, or you can take the fast approach that I will describe below. We love easy fixes and instant solutions. In life generally there are no such things. This is the only exception I know of.? So keep reading.

The subconscious mind it the powerhouse of our mind.? If it is programmed to do something it will do it, even if you consciously try to do something else.? You have no choice over your sub-conscious mind. ? Your will power does not work.? The mind can be compared to an iceberg. The conscious mind that is exposed is only 1/10th of the subconscious mind that is hidden under the water. Imagine you are sitting on that iceberg and trying to navigate it through the waters. The undercurrent waters take you to a direction that you don?t want to go. You paddle hard to go against the current.? But you go nowhere or as soon as you stop paddling you are again drifting back to the old habits.? If you only look at the hidden size of the iceberg you will realize why you fail.

I can suggest wonderful books on this subject. The best is The Six Pillars of Self-Esteem by Nathaniel Brandon, from which I quoted above text.? These six pillars are:

  1. The Practice of Living Consciously
  2. The Practice of Self-Acceptance
  3. The Practice of Self-Responsibility
  4. The Practice of Self-Assertiveness
  5. The Practice of Living Purposefully
  6. The Practice of Personal Integrity

I recommend this book. ?However, you need more than conscious understanding of the problem when you are dealing with something that has its roots in the subconscious mind. ?You have to change the programming of our subconscious mind.

The difficulty is in the fact that our adult brain is critical.? If you tell yourself that you are a loveable person, your critical mind will runs this information against what it has been programmed in your subconscious mind and if it is not resonating with it, will reject it.

The programming in your subconscious mind can be, and often is, false. But your subconscious mind is not concerned about true and false. It deals with emotions. Its job is self-preservation, i.e., the preservation of you. ?It will do everything to preserve the image that it has of you. If you tell yourself that you are a good person, your subconscious mind feels threatened because it only recognizes you as a worthless person and that is the image that it wants to preserve. ?You see, the subconscious mind is not rational.? It can?t distinguish between good and bad.? It accepts everything you tell it as fact.

meditation

The only way to change your life is to change the programming in your subconscious mind. And the way to do that is the same way that it was done in the first place. When you were a child you did not have a rational mind to filter the information that you received.? Now, you have to silence your rational mind completely if you want to re-write the programming in your subconscious mind. ?This can be done by bringing the brain frequency from Beta to Alpha and even to Theta levels. Then the critical mind is inactive and without its interference you can delete the negative programming in your subconscious mind and write new ones.

This is very simple.? How long does it take? It can take half an hour. But for a lasting effect you need to repeat it daily for at least 30 days to start feeling the result. ? This is the fastest way I know for radical and lasing transformation. It is far more effective than any therapy.

If the programming in my subconscious mind tells me I am a failure. I can tell myself I am a success, but I won?t believe it. It all sounds lies to me.? Because I have accepted the lies that I am not good in my childhood as truth, now my subconscious mind will reject anything that goes against those lies. The Jesuits understood this very well. Their maxim was ?Give me a child for his first seven years and I?ll give you the man.? This also explains why we cling so tenaciously to the religion of our childhood, even though we know nothing about it. I can?t tell you how many times I have received emails from rude Muslims who tell me they are not scholars and they are not even good Muslims but they insult me and act most obnoxiously. They are threatened when I criticize their religion because they identify themselves with it.? Truth and falsehood is irrelevant for the subconscious mind. Your belief about yourself is the same. You want to cling to that belief as if your life depend on it.

The good news is that we can change our childhood programming.? To do that we have to access our subconscious mind without the interference of our conscious mind. ?We can do that through meditation and/or self-hypnosis.? Go to Youtube and search under self-hypnosis. You will find many recordings that will help you lower your Beta brain activity through relaxation, and after you reach the Alpha state of mind, they reprogram your belief about yourself.

Miraculous transformations can happen almost overnight.? You can get rid of any addiction, any self-debilitating behavior and belief about yourself. You can gain more self-confidence, overcome your fears and anxieties, get rid of your bad habits, ?eliminate your shyness, meet the love of your life, improve your relationship, overcome your anger, and be a more happy and successful person.? Self-hypnosis, meditation and visualization are ways to do that.? They are far more effective than any psychotherapy and they cost nothing.?? There are also hypnotic practitioners that can help.? In most developed countries they are licensed.

Don?t let your low self-esteem rob you from your life. You have tremendous powers hidden within you.? Access your subconscious mind and reprogram yourself the way you want yourself to be through meditation and self-hypnosis. Hypnotherapy can create unconscious change in you in your thoughts, attitudes, behaviors and your feelings.? We have the technology to redesign ourselves. Why live with limitations when you can reach the moon?

Kane County Chronicle | Boomers often must care for parents, children

Bob Brown and his wife told their children they could live with them for a year after graduating from college ? but they really wanted them moved out in six months and would charge them rent.

"They moved pretty fast," the St. Charles resident said of his children, now 33, 31 and 29.

But for six months out of the year, Brown and his wife open their home to his 97-year-old father-in-law, who is mobile and has all of his faculties. He spends the winters in Austin, Texas, with his other married daughter.

"He doesn't wear out his welcome," Brown said.

At 66, Brown is part of the baby boomer generation, those born between 1946 and 1964. As baby boomers cross the threshold into retirement age ? 10,000 boomers a day turn 65 in the United States ? many are paying more attention to family and the need to care for aging parents while helping adult children in a down economy.

"The baby boomer generation often fills in the family," said Lucia Jones, executive director for the Northeastern Illinois Area Agency on Aging, which helps coordinate federal funds and general resources to senior service agencies in metropolitan Chicago, including organizations in Kane, DuPage, Grundy, Kankakee, Kendall, Lake, McHenry and Will counties.

"They are often saddled with responsibilities to their parents, as well as their younger children," she added.

The agency coordinates with local groups such as ElderDay Center and Fox Valley Volunteer Hospice in Kane County. Kane County has seen an increase in demand for services by those in their early 60s, according to the 2011-2012 Kane County Community Health Assessment.

"The fastest-growing age group in Kane is the age group 55 to 69 years, which increased by more than 70 percent," according to the assessment. "In fact, the 60 to 64 year age group doubled in the last 10 years."

Many of these baby boomers have found themselves serving as caregivers for their parents, who are living longer than previous generations and increasingly are preferring to age at home, Jones said.

That's the situation for Campton Hills residents Sandy and Pat Ryan ? he was born during the baby boom ? who have welcomed Sandy's 83-year-old mother to share their home with them and their two teenage daughters, Sara and Emily.

Sandy Ryan said her mother probably takes care of her family more than they take care of her, but she noted she handles some of her mother's medical needs, like talking with doctors.

Having her at the house can be stressful at times on both sides, she said.

"She's more concerned about certain things the girls are doing than I would be," Sandy Ryan said. "I think she has a hard time realizing they're at the age that they are."

Parenting children, caring for parents

The Browns and Ryans are hardly alone in caring for a parent: Nearly 10 million adult children older than 50 provide care for their aging parents, a 2011 study from MetLife on the caregiving costs for working baby boomers found.

The total lifetime financial impact ? in terms of lost wages, Social Security benefits and private pensions ? for the average baby boomer to care for their parents is $303,880, the study found. That amount includes leaving the labor force early and/or reduced hours of work.

The caregiver role ranges from helping with the bills to helping with medical treatment. About one-third of caregivers, the study showed, work fewer hours or leave the workforce early to focus on caring for their elderly parents.

"The trend is that people want to live in their homes and not in an institutionalized program," said Betsy Creamer, supervisor for the Illinois Department on Aging's Office of Older American Services. "Baby boomers are providing more and more care to their families as caregivers."

Creamer's office helps administer the department's community care program, which provides in-home services for seniors. Illinois has seen a "fairly dramatic" increase in demand for the program, which now serves 46,750 more residents than in 2003, Creamer said.

But baby boomers also are turning to assisted living places for help. The Autumn Leaves Alzheimer's and Memory Care Assisted Living community in St. Charles receives many inquiries from adult children about services for their parents, Executive Director Brian Nebel said.

Autumn Leaves staff acknowledged that adult children often struggle with feelings of guilt because they promised their parents they wouldn't put them in a home. After doing so, however, many wish they had done so sooner, staff members said.

In addition to their parents, baby boomers often feel obligated to help their children, many struggling to find jobs in a slow economy that includes persistently high unemployment.

A 2012 survey from the National Endowment for Financial Education found that 59 percent of parents are providing financial support ? such as living expenses and transportation costs ? to adult children who no longer are in school.

The findings were released at the same time the MetLife Mature Market Institute surveyed 2,123 Americans ages 21 to 65 on the level of financial responsibility people of different generations feel in a variety of family roles.

In it, 77 percent of baby boomers interviewed said they wish they could do more for their children.

About 44 percent of baby boomers felt an absolute or strong responsibility to provide for their child's higher education, and a near identical amount ? 45 percent ? felt the same way toward allowing a child to live at home during times of financial difficulty.

Geneva resident Margaret Evans, 57, works four jobs ? three part-time and one full-time ? because, in addition to having many bills, she is supporting her 22-year-old son.

Her son recently finished the automotive program at Waubonsee Community College, and hopes to sign up for a program at Southern Illinois University in Carbondale, Evans said, noting that expense.

"He's got to find a job," she said.

Brown ? the St. Charles baby boomer who encouraged his three children to live on their own after graduating from college ? said they returned home for a short period before finding other living arrangements.

"It's good for everybody," he said.

There are 6 hours, 59 minutes remaining to comment on this story.
