Colorado exported 18 percent more agricultural goods in the first six months of this year than it did in the first half of 2011.
Agricultural exports make up a significant portion of the state?s overall exports, according to a release from the state. And through the first two quarters of this year, Colorado has exported more than $710 million worth of goods.
Colorado Agricultural Commissioner John Salazar said there are increasing export opportunities as the state?s goods begin to make their ways into international markets. Exports to Canada and Mexico increased in 2012, but exports to Japan increased by 48 percent to $99.6 million. Exports to Russia increased by 83 percent to $28.7 million.
Colorado?s biggest agriculture exports include meat, dairy, vegetables and wheat.
?Colorado agriculture is the fabric of this state, with locally grown products sold from our local farmers markets to markets abroad,? Salazar said in a statement. ?We are enthused about the continued growth of Colorado?s agricultural exports to international markets, which contribute to Colorado?s economic vitality.?
