Health and Fitness Articles ? Blog Archive ? Independent living ...

Specially designed disabled baths, ceiling hoists, special mobility equipment, all wonderful things a step in the right direction for those living with disabilities and those in the position of looking after them and caring them. Independent living resonates with our cultures worship of and need for independence and the total fear of being reliant on others. Of course these are all good inventions, but hopefully we will not lose the value of caring relationships.

There should be a balance between the goal of independent living, and the community feeling and benefits that come from relationships where people rely on one another and need one another. It is the involvement of true friends and family that make independent living work.

Especially for those who have been born with disabilities. As children they can learn to use disability equipment in a way that allows them to have much more independence and hope of a future of semi-independence as they grow older. Yet it must be balanced with involvement from friends and family as well. It?s great to be independent and be able to find ways to care for oneself without the constant present of someone else, but disabled people need support in other ways.

Disabled children of today who are growing up learning to use the various tools designed for disabilities, are at an advantage because they are learning how to be more independent from the start. In some ways, the more independence people can experience in their personal care, the more time it gives them to build relationships that are not based on the need for that level of care.

Ultimately it would be wonderful if all disabled children could be cared for in the home, and later in life to be able to live with a sense of independence, yet it is important that just because their physical needs are being taken care of, their emotional needs are not forgotten.

When you live with a disability its important to get as much help as you can. Getting quality products such as a disabled bath from www.astorbannerman.co.uk is a must a simple and effect solution.
