Obama's Credibility Is Melting


The collapse of ObamaCare is the tip of the iceberg for the magical Obama presidency.



From the moment he emerged in the public eye with his 2004 speech at the Democratic Convention and through his astonishing defeat of the Clintons in 2008, Barack Obama's calling card has been credibility. He speaks, and enough of the world believes to keep his presidency afloat. Or used to.


All of a sudden, from Washington to Riyadh, Barack Obama's credibility is melting.

Vatican Challenges Church Of England ... To A Cricket Match


The Vatican has announced it will be engaging in "sporting diplomacy" with a new team. St. Peter's Cricket Club will be made up of priests and seminarians from cricket-loving countries. And the Vatican threw down a challenge to longtime rival the Church of England: Form a team and make it the Anglicans versus the Catholics at Lord's Cricket Ground in London.

Republicans' Embarassing ObamaCare Overreach


Now, with GOP hostage threats tucked away in abeyance, and Healthcare.gov’s prognosis unclear, Democrats on Capitol Hill and in the Obama administration are entertaining a couple of ways to ameliorate the problems the site is creating for consumers in states with broken marketplaces, without harming the basic integrity of the law.



The coalition is hanging together against GOP sabotage efforts under the worst possible circumstances. And, as such, Republicans are resorting to what you could either call derp, or outright deceit — your mileage may vary.

Taylor Swift Out in LA After Katy Perry Confesses to Keeping A Lock of Her Hair

Keeping busy with rehearsals between tour stops, Taylor Swift headed to a dance studio in Los Angeles on Thursday (October 24).


The "I Knew You Were Trouble" singer wore a pink shirt with "LOVE PINK" on it, cropped black leggings, and blue sneakers as she exited the building.


Recently, Katy Perry revealed that she's a bit of a superfan when it comes to the 23-year-old country crooner and Miley Cyrus.


In an interview at the iHeartRadio Theater to celebrate her new album, Katy shared, "One of the first times I went to the Grammys, I got to share a dressing room with Miley Cyrus and Taylor Swift. And I asked for a lock of their hair from each one of them, which is totally creepy, but awesome. I put little bows on them individually and put them in my purse. And that was my little secret and I'm a freak!"

Apple TV Software 6.0.1 released, seemingly minor update

Apple TV Software 6.0.1 released

Apple has released a minor update for the Apple TV. This latest update to Apple TV software version 6.0.1, comes just two days after Apple rolled out iMovie Theater for the device. As of yet, we're not seeing anything new, so it may just be a bug fix release.

To update your Apple TV manually, go to Settings > General > Software Updates, and hit Update Software. If you happen to notice anything new, be sure to drop us a line in the comments!

ROCHESTER, Minn. -- Clifford Jack Jr., M.D., radiologist and noted Alzheimer's disease researcher at Mayo Clinic, has been elected to the Institute of Medicine, part of the national academies. Election is considered one of the top honors in medicine.


"This is a great recognition for Dr. Cliff Jack and an honor that is well deserved," says
John Noseworthy, M.D., president and CEO of Mayo Clinic. "Dr. Jack is internationally known for his discoveries in radiology and imaging and for his impact on Alzheimer's disease analysis. Much of what we know about how Alzheimer's develops is because Cliff Jack found a way to visualize it."


Dr. Jack is a pioneer in developing medical imaging methods that identify biomarkers for Alzheimer's disease. He has introduced imaging methods to help identify aspects of Alzheimer's in the brain, determine its severity, measure disease progression, and predict its progression. His approaches and imaging techniques have been widely adopted by others. His early achievements focused on a type of brain imaging known as anatomic magnetic resonance imaging, but he has also made pioneering contributions in magnetic resonance spectroscopy, diffusion imaging, functional MRI, high field microimaging, and amyloid positron emission tomography (PET) analyses of amyloid burden. The criteria described for presymptomatic Alzheimer's by the National Institute on Aging and the Alzheimer's Association are based largely on his model.


Ronald Petersen, M.D., Ph.D., director of the Mayo Clinic Study of Aging, has said of Dr. Jack, "I cannot think of another person who has had a greater long-term impact on the field of neuroimaging in aging and dementia."


Dr. Jack is the Alexander Family Professor of Alzheimer's Disease Research at Mayo Clinic, where he completed a fellowship in neuroradiology. He earned his medical degree at Wayne State University and completed his residency in diagnostic radiology at Henry Ford Hospital. Dr. Jack joined Mayo Clinic in Rochester in 1985. He has been awarded the Potamkin Prize for Alzheimer's and Related Diseases from the American Academy of Neurology and also the MetLife Foundation Award for Medical Research in Alzheimer's disease. Both are the highest honors given in the field of Alzheimer's research. He has also received the Gold Medal from the International Society of Magnetic Resonance in Medicine, the American Society of Neuroradiology Award for Outstanding Contributions in Research, and was elected to the inaugural Council of Distinguished Investigators of the Academy of Radiology Research.


Dr. Jack has mentored a number of promising young scientists, three of whom now have their own programs nested within his lab.


Dr. Jack's research has been continuously funded by the National Institutes of Health since 1991. His research group develops and validates magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), amyloid and fluorodeoxyglucose positron emission tomography analysis methods for diagnosing and measuring progression of Alzheimer's disease and related disorders. A major effort is directed at modeling interrelationships among cognitive performance, imaging, and biofluid biomarkers over time. Dr. Jack's research group serves as the magnetic resonance imaging center for several large national multisite studies including the Alzheimer's Disease Neuroimaging Initiative, the Dominantly Inherited Alzheimer's Network, and Atherosclerotic Risk in Communities.


The Institute of Medicine is both an honor membership organization and an expert advisory group that serves as a national resource for independent analysis and recommendations on health issues. New members are elected by current active members through a selective process that recognizes individuals who have made major contributions to the advancement of the medical sciences, health care and public health. With their election, members commit to volunteer their service on Institute of Medicine committees, boards and other activities.


Mayo physician-researchers Richard Ehman, M.D., also a radiologist, and Andrew Engel, M.D., a neurologist, have also been elected to the Institute of Medicine.

Nitrogen, phosphorus export must be reduced




October 24, 2013The Mississippi River Basin is home to much of the United States' fertile crop land. Though we need our food and energy crops, their production has led to an increase in the levels of nutrients such as nitrogen and phosphorus in our water sources. Increasing nutrient levels affects our rivers, lakes, and oceans. Single cell plants, called phytoplankton, feed off the increased nutrients, and in doing so start a cascade of events that leads to low oxygen levels in the water bodies. This low oxygen condition is called hypoxia. The result is dying fish and a poor ecosystem, called a "dead zone."

The dead zone in the Gulf of Mexico, where the Mississippi meets the ocean, has received much attention in the last decade, and led to the creation of the Mississippi River/Gulf of Mexico Watershed Nutrient Task Force.

"We need to see an increase in the rate of implementing practices that lower nutrient export," says Matt Helmers, PhD, of Iowa State University, and member of the Soil Science Society of America. "Cover crops not only decrease the amount of nitrogen and phosphorus leaving the fields, but they improve the soil in other ways. Subsurface drainage bioreactorsoften called wood chip trenchesand specialized wetland systems also reduce nutrient export."

Helmers admits the "challenges are more complex than changing the inputs to our crops," such as corn and soybean. And, because there are not short-term financial gains to most of the practices that reduce nutrient export, the industry may be slower to adopt change. "If we don't show reduced nitrogen and phosphorus export, we may see regulation."

Helmers is part of the Iowa team working to develop and implement Iowa's management plans. Currently, Mississippi, Iowa, Wisconsin, Indiana and Ohio, have plans in place. Seven states still need to finish their plans. He will be part of a panel discussion, "Hypoxia Issues in the Gulf of Mexico," Wednesday, November 6, 2013: 12:00 PM. The presentation is part of the American Society of Agronomy, Crop Science Society of America, and the Soil Science Society of America Annual Meetings, Nov. 3-6 in Tampa, Florida. The theme of this year's conference is "Water, Food, Energy, & Innovation for a Sustainable World".
