YOKOHAMA, Japan (AP) ? Brazil's Corinthians ended Europe's five-year winning streak at the Club World Cup, beating Chelsea 1-0 Sunday night behind Paolo Guerrero's goal off a scramble in the 69th minute.

Paulinho broke into the box and laid the ball off to Danilo, whose shot deflected off the legs of defender Gary Cahill. The ball bounded to Guerrero, and the Peruvian headed the ball past goalkeeper Petr Cech and defenders David Luiz and Ashley Cole, who all were on the goal line.

Fernando Torres headed the ball into the goal in the second minute of stoppage time but was ruled offside.

"You could see today from the first minute it was going to be tough, they were very physical and organized," Chelsea manager Rafa Benitez said. "We had many chances but their 'keeper was man of the match."

Corinthians, which won the inaugural tournament in 2000, joined Barcelona as the only teams to win the title twice.

Goalkeeper Cassio made several important saves, giving to stop Cahill's shot in the 11th minute and Victor Moses' angled effort in the 39th.

"This victory is the result of teamwork. Each player played his own role," Corinthians coach Tite said. "There were a lot of elements to this victory. We created many chances and it was a high quality match for us. We used our marking system in the second half. We did get tired but we stayed calm"

Chelsea finished a man short after Cahill was give a red card for a rough challenge on Emerson in the 90th.

Frank Lampard, back from a right calf injury, captained Chelsea in his third appearances and first start since Oct 23.

"We knew it was going to be a tough game," Lampard said. "They were very organized on counterattack. It was disappointing to come all the way out here and not win it."

Benitez was in his third world final, following a loss with Liverpool in 2005 and a win with Inter Milan two years ago.

The tournament was the first to feature goal-line technology. Magnetic-field-based system GoalRef was used at Yokohama Stadium ,while Toyota Stadium was equipped with the camera-based Hawk-Eye system. There were no close calls, however.

Mexico's Monterrey defeated Egypt's Al-Ahly for third place on goals by Jesus Corona in the third minute and Cesar Delgado in the 66th.

Yemen gives 93 soldiers jail terms for attack on base

SANAA (Reuters) - A Yemeni military court sentenced 93 members of the Republican Guard to prison terms of up to seven years for an attack on a military complex in August, the Defense Ministry said on Saturday.

The sentences, which were more lenient than expected, followed increased tensions between factions loyal to former President Ali Abdullah Saleh, whose son commands the Republican Guard, and the interim government led by President Abd-Rabbu Mansour Hadi.

On Tuesday, Brigadier General Ahmed Saleh refused orders to hand over long-range missiles to the Defense Ministry, raising fears of showdown that threatens a fragile transition agreed in February.

The United States and Yemen's Gulf neighbors fear political instability in the impoverished Arabian Peninsula state will allow a branch of al Qaeda based there to strike at top oil exporter Saudi Arabia and Red Sea shipping lanes.

The Republican Guard, the best-equipped of Yemen's military units, is seen as important in efforts to contain al Qaeda and Islamist groups that took over towns in the south this year.

Former president Saleh, who was pushed from power in February after more than a year of protests, was granted immunity from prosecution and is seen by some Yemeni politicians as attempting to retain influence.

Judge Abdulmalik Ali Rashid al-Arshi convicted the men of offences including "assaulting a defense complex in Sanaa on Aug 14, deserting their military posts... refusing orders from the president of the republic, opening fire... resulting in murder and attempted murder," a statement on the ministry website said.

The men were given jail terms of between three to seven years, while five other Republican Guard members were acquitted, according to the ministry's statement.

The assault on the complex in August was sparked by President Hadi's decision to bring two Republican Guard brigades under the control of the southern and central military regions, which are not under Saleh's control.

Hundreds of guardsmen besieged a Defense Ministry compound in Sanaa but were captured by other military forces and about a hundred were arrested.

Chinese probe snaps close-ups of an asteroid

SASTIND via Weibo / UMSF

China's Chang'e-2 probe took multiple images of the asteroid Toutatis during its Dec. 13 flyby.

By Alan Boyle

China's official news agency is reporting that the country's Chang'e 2 deep-space probe made an amazing flyby of the asteroid Toutatis this week, snapping a series of pictures as it passed just 2 miles away. The achievement signals China's entry into yet another exclusive space club.

Only four of the world's space efforts have managed close encounters with asteroids: NASA (with NEAR Shoemaker and Dawn, for example), the European Space Agency (with Rosetta), Japan (with Hayabusa) ??and now China with Toutatis.

The official Xinhua news agency quoted officials at the?State Administration of Science, Technology and Industry for National Defense, or SASTIND, as saying that Chang'e 2 buzzed past the 3-mile-long (5-kilometer-long) asteroid at a relative speed of 24,000 mph (10.73 kilometers per second).

Chang'e 2 was launched in 2010?primarily to serve as a lunar orbiter, but after a successful mission at the moon, the $132 million spacecraft was repurposed as a deep-space explorer.?The encounter with Toutatis had been planned for months, but Chinese media kept mum about the results until Saturday.

Aficionados of planetary science hailed China's success.

"Oh my goodness, did they succeed. This is awesome," the Planetary Society's Emily Lakdawalla said in a blog post passing along the news. On the Unmanned Spaceflight discussion forum, Ted Stryk wrote, "Welcome to the interplanetary club, China."

Toutatis is a near-Earth object that's big enough to cause a mass extinction if it were to hit our planet?? but fortunately, it isn't projected to come all that near in the foreseeable future. This week it passed by Earth at a minimum distance of 4.3 million miles (7 million kilometers). That provided scientists with an opportunity to study the peanut-shaped space mountain at a relatively close but totally safe distance.

NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory conducted a series of radar observations using the Goldstone radio antenna in California, and on Friday, JPL released a grainy time-lapse video showing Toutatis' rotation.

This video, generated from Goldstone's Solar System Radar, shows the rotation of the asteroid when it was 4.3 million miles from Earth.

The insights gleaned from such observations could conceivably help scientists figure out how asteroids came into existence early in the solar system's history, how to mine asteroids for valuable resources, or how to divert asteroids that have the potential to threaten Earth.

Lakdawalla noted that the radar readings, combined with China's up-close images, made Toutatis one of the "best-studied asteroids in the solar system."?That sounds like a bold statement, considering that NASA studied the asteroid Eros with NEAR Shoemaker for more than a year, and had Dawn in orbit around the asteroid Vesta for a year as well. But the fact that Toutatis has gotten so much attention in the past week from multiple space efforts certainly suggests that scientists see "minor planets" as a major interest.

Still more asteroid encounters are on the agenda in coming years ??including Dawn's arrival at the dwarf planet Ceres in 2015, a potential sequel to Japan's Hayabusa mission, and the crewed mission that NASA wants to send to a near-Earth asteroid in the mid-2020s.

And let's not forget China. Chang'e 2 isn't finished just yet.?Xinhua quoted sources as saying that the probe "is continuing its deep space travel and will reach a distance of more than 10 million kilometers away from Earth in January next year."

Human link to climate change stronger than ever: draft report

LONDON | Fri Dec 14, 2012 11:20am EST

LONDON (Reuters) - International climate scientists are more certain than ever that humans are responsible for global warming, rising sea levels and extreme weather events, according to a leaked draft report by an influential panel of experts.

The early draft, which is still subject to change before a final version is released in late 2013, showed that a rise in global average temperatures since pre-industrial times was set to exceed 2 degrees Celsius by 2100, and may reach 4.8 Celsius.

"It is extremely likely that human activities have caused more than half of the observed increase in global average surface temperatures since the 1950s," the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) draft report said.

"Extremely likely" in the IPCC's language means a level of certainty of at least 95 percent. The next level is "virtually certain", or 99 percent, the greatest possible certainty for the scientists.

The IPCC's previous report, in 2007, said it was at least 90 percent certain that human activities, led by burning fossil fuels, were the cause of rising temperatures.

The draft was shown on a climate change skeptic blog.

The IPCC said the unauthorized, premature posting of the draft may lead to confusion because the report was still work in progress and was likely to change before it is released.

A United Nations conference last week aimed at curbing emissions of greenhouse gases blamed for global warning yielded no progress and three countries - Canada, Russia and Japan - have abandoned the Kyoto Protocol limiting the emissions.

The United States never ratified it in the first place, and it excludes developing countries where emissions are growing most quickly.

Countries agreed to extend Kyoto to 2020, but only those covering less than 15 percent of world greenhouse gas emissions signed up. Developing nations said they would push next year for a radical U.N. mechanism to compensate them for the impact of climate change.

The IPCC said it had "high confidence" that human activity had caused large-scale changes in oceans, in ice sheets or mountain glaciers, and in sea levels in the second half of the twentieth century, according to the draft.

It said some extreme weather events had also changed due to human influences.

THREAT TO CITIES

The draft's scenarios forecast a rise in temperatures of between 0.2 and 4.8 Celsius this century - a narrower band than in 2007. But in almost all of the scenarios, the rise would exceed 2 degrees Celsius.

Governments pledged in 2010 to try to stop global temperatures rising by more than 2 degrees, a threshold seen by scientists as the maximum to avoid more extreme weather, droughts, floods, and other climate change impacts.

Carbon dioxide concentrations in the atmosphere were the highest in 800,000 years, according to the draft report.

The draft also said that sea levels were likely to rise by between 29 and 82 centimeters by the end of the century - compared to 18-59 centimeters projected in the 2007 report.

Rising sea levels are a threat to people living in low-lying areas, from Bangladesh to the cities of New York, London and Buenos Aires. They open up the risk of storm surges, coastal erosion and, in the worst case scenario, the complete swamping of large areas of land.

The IPCC carries weight because it brings together all scientific research on climate change and informs policymakers.

Many countries want to study the final IPCC report before signing up to a new global pact to cut greenhouse gas emissions.

The draft included a possible future acceleration of ice loss from Antarctica and Greenland, which was omitted in 2007. It stopped short of including some research carried out since 2007 that suggested seas may rise by up to 2 meters by 2100.

Connectify Dispatch now available, melds all our internet access into one speedy link (video)

Connectify Dispatch

Clearly, there's a lot of us out there who like the idea of blending multiple connection types: in the wake of a better than expected Kickstarter run, Connectify's Dispatch is ready to download. As promised, the app unifies as many cellular, Ethernet and WiFi connections as a computer can muster, whether it's for a simple speed increase or a quick handover if one or more links goes down. It's also smart about bandwidth use, tracking usage and prioritizing connections to avoid using that heavily capped mobile data plan until it's absolutely necessary. Only Windows users get to boost their internet for now, although Connectify is hoping for Android, Linux and Mac ports in 2013.
