OUYA: Android Game Console's Secrets Raise Questions

While the OUYA ? the Android-based, hackable video game console ? is still raking in funds on its multi-million dollar Kickstarter project, the secretive nature of the project is raising questions for game developers.

?How can the OUYA convince developers who are sitting on the sidelines to jump in?? asks Gree Vice President of Studio Operations Anil Dharni. ?I am very interested, but where are the users? Where are the gamers??

Until three months ago, Dharni was the Chief Operating Officer of Funzio, which released three well-received titles on iOS and one on Android. He and CEO Ken Chui sold Funzio to Gree for $210 million, giving Gree, a Japanese social network that has been expanding aggressively into America, its own development team.

Dharni says OUYA has two distinct advantages: it is using Android as its platform, and its focus is on the television market. He said the biggest challenge its makers face will be luring developers to create games that will have to be programmed differently from any others on the Android market. Since the OUYA will use a traditional console controller with a touchpad in the center, even games on the Android market will need to be restructured to work with it.

OUYA is not entirely bereft of content. On July 19th, the company announced via its Kickstarter page that Robert Bowling would bring prequel games to his recently announced zombie survivor game Human Element exclusively to the OUYA. Though a big name for the platform, it?s only the second title confirmed for the console.

Bowling, who was behind the Call of Duty series of games, said he has already contributed $10,000 to the console?s development. This type of developer involvement is something that Dharni says could be a concern.

?It?s a chicken and the egg situation,? he says. ?I would like to know if it?s gamers or game developers funding the project on Kickstarter. It makes a difference on who will end up using it.?

Dharni says Gree will take a wait-and-see approach with the OUYA; the company doesn?t want to have its products associated with something that is going to flail in the marketplace. But he said the console space is the next frontier to be disrupted, similar to how free-to-play has changed mobile and PC gaming.

?It?s often the case that the first one that launches doesn?t end up being the right product,? he says. ?I hope it works out for them and I wish them luck.?

Japan investigates alleged cover-up at nuclear plant

Workers at the Fukushima nuclear power plant may have been forced to underreport the amount of radiation they were exposed to.

By Mari Yamaguchi,?Associated Press / July 22, 2012

Workers in protective suits and masks wait to enter the emergency operation center at the crippled Fukushima Dai-ichi nuclear power station in Okuma, Japan in November 2011. Japanese labor officials said they are investigating subcontractors on suspicion they forced workers at the tsunami-hit nuclear plant to underreport their dosimeter readings so they could stay on the job longer.

Labor officials said Sunday that an investigation had begun over the weekend following media reports of a cover-up at the Fukushima Dai-ichi plant, which suffered multiple meltdowns following the March 2011 earthquake and tsunami disasters.

A subcontractor of plant operator Tokyo Electric Power Co., or TEPCO, acknowledged having nine workers cover their dosimeters with lead plates late last year so the instrument would indicate a lower level of radiation exposure.

The investigation marks the first time the government has looked into the case, believed to be part of a widespread practice at the plant since it was hit by the worst atomic crisis since Chernobyl.

The government more than doubled the emergency radiation exposure limit soon after the accident, but lowered it back to the previous level in December. The law now sets the exposure limit at 50 millisieverts per year, or a five-year total of 100 millisieverts.

Dosimeter readings are crucial personal records that determine how much longer a worker can stay on a plant job. Work at highly contaminated areas could quickly eat up a worker's quota.

The issue reflects a growing concern among the government and TEPCO about how to secure a continuous flow of workers to finish cleaning up the plant. Officials say it will take about 40 years to decommission the plant's four wrecked reactors ? three with melted cores and another with a spent fuel pool in a shattered building.

Labor officials made onsite inspections at the Fukushima plant to examine dosimeter readings of the workers and other records, said Yasuhiro Kishi, an official at the Fukushima Labor Bureau.

Health and Labor Ministry officials repeatedly issued warnings to TEPCO during the first few months of the crisis about the company's lax oversight of workers' exposures. Officials have also said TEPCO had several workers share a dosimeter not just early in the crisis when the equipment was in short supply due to tsunami damage, but even after a full stock had been regained.

Takashi Wada, president of Fukushima-based subcontractor Build-Up, acknowledged this weekend that the dosimeter falsification had taken place. He said a supervisor of the group of nine workers came up with the idea when his dosimeter alarm went off during his short preview visit to the area where the workers were assigned.

"We should have never done that," Wada told an interview with TBS network broadcast Saturday.

Good Reads: Syria's conflict, hero journalists, and the power of parents

A tribute to war correspondent Marie Colvin, a few tips about Syria from Lawrence of Arabia, and one Indian woman's fight against sexual harassment top this week's list of stories worth reading.

Being Marie Colvin

The news reports that come out of Syria on a daily basis often leave more questions than answers. How do ordinary people survive in such a war? How can a country?s leader order his military to fire artillery shells into packed urban areas, knowing that such actions will cause civilian casualties by the thousands?

The late foreign correspondent Marie Colvin was obsessed by these questions. Like many war correspondents, she ran toward the sound of gunfire, while everyone else was running away. In February of this year, she had herself smuggled by Syrian opposition members into the besieged city of Homs to document what she considered a terrible war crime, made more terrible by the fact that no one was there to see it, or to stop it. It was an assignment that would cost her her life.

Why did she do it? Marie Brenner in Vanity Fair explores the past of this teacher?s daughter from Long Island, and her dangerous passion for being an eyewitness to history:

For Colvin, the facts were clear: a murderous dictator was bombarding a city that had no food, power, or medical supplies.?[NATO] and the United Nations stood by doing nothing. In a nearby village, hours before they left, Conroy had watched her trying to get a signal and file her story for the next day?s paper on her vintage satellite phone. ?Why is the world not here?? she asked her assistant in London. That question, posed by Colvin so many times before ? in East Timor, Libya, Kosovo, Chechnya, Iran, Iraq, Sri Lanka ? was the continuing theme of her life. ?The next war I cover,? she had written in 2001, ?I?ll be more awed than ever by the quiet bravery of civilians who endure far more than I ever will.?

Lawrence of Syria

The black-and-white morality of the Syrian conflict ? symbolized by Syrian President Bashar Al-Assad?s overwhelming use of force, and by the cruelty of his intelligence service in torturing opponents and dissidents ? doesn?t make it any easier to find a solution to the crisis.

Former UN Secretary General Kofi Annan has been struggling with this question for months, with few results. Support for Assad from Russia and China doesn't make it any easier.

But should the world intervene militarily in Syria??It?s a question that T.E. Lawrence, better known as ?Lawrence of Arabia,? had an answer for: No.

Photos: Sports Camp at Limestone Park 2012 | The Botetourt View ...

Limestone Ministries, an outreach of Mill Creek Baptist Church, and Botetourt Parks and Recreation are hosting a sports camp this week. Stations are set up through out the grounds of Limestone Park to provide children a way to gain some sports action and practice skills.

J.R. Graybill, youth pastor for Mill Creek Baptist Church, is the director of the camp. ?This is our 8th year? with the camp.?

Though, the weather is hot? the hottest topic is that an average of 250 youth counselors and kids are participating.? the Camp counselors are mostly athletes from James River plus some talented adults who are helping as volunteers.

A misting station has been set up for relief of the heat and humidity.

Liz Provost, a volunteer for Buchanan Rescue Squad is also parked by the misting area just in case her services are needed for an injury or scrape. She said, ?We are averaging 30 campers with anything from a scrape, to heat to bee stings? under her tent.

Plenty of water is available at the drinking station and camp counselors were encouraging frequent breaks.

The sports the children aged from K-5 grade included: football, cheerleading, tennis, basketball, swimming, soccer, archery, volleyball, gymnastics and basketball. Even Rev. Randy Daniels, pastor at Mill Creek is in on the act and teaches the tennis class.

Swimming by far looked the most appealing, but archery seemed to be the most popular as the boys and girls like aiming at cool targets even on a hot day! The Botetourt View tried and made a second ring circle! Archery is lead by Jimmy Brugh and his teen volunteers.

Graybill praised the efforts of local churches and businesses who have provided food and snack as well as volunteers. ?This has been a community effort,? he said.

The camp will continue through Friday when former UVA standout football player, John Copper will be the featured speaker.
