News Corp to name Thomson as Publishing Co CEO next week: sources

(Reuters) - News Corp is expected to name Robert Thomson, a close confidant of Chairman and CEO Rupert Murdoch, to lead its new publishing company by the end of next week, according to sources familiar with News Corp's plans.

Thomson is currently managing editor of the Wall Street Journal and editor in chief of its publisher Dow Jones & Co, which News Corp acquired in 2007. Gerard Baker, currently the deputy editor of the Journal, is expected to succeed Thomson, according to these sources.

Murdoch will be relying on his trusted lieutenant to steer the new company - whose main assets apart from Dow Jones include its British and Australian newspapers and HarperCollins book publishing business - at a difficult time. Newspapers in many developed markets are suffering from a severe drop in advertising revenue and circulation is being hit as readers are choosing to get their news on smartphones and tablets.

Among the key decisions Thomson will have to make include what to do about the financially struggling New York Post and whether the new company will go on an acquisition spree for other U.S. newspapers that could come on the market, such as the Los Angeles Times and the Chicago Tribune.

Thomson and Baker were not immediately available for comment. Representatives for Dow Jones and News Corp were also not immediately available.

In June, News Corp said it was separating its publishing and entertainment assets in response to shareholders who had pressed News Corp to get rid of its troubled newspapers business after a phone hacking scandal tainted its British newspapers and forced the company to drop its proposed acquisition of pay-TV group BSkyB.

News Corp is still finalizing the details of other executive appointments within the new company - a decision that could delay the announcement of the appointments of Thomson and Baker, one of the sources said. It wasn't immediately clear whether the role of Dow Jones CEO Lex Fenwick will change in any way.

Murdoch will hold the chairman title at the publishing company after its split from the entertainment side, which will include most of the group's TV and movie studio assets and where he will remain chairman and CEO.

The confirmation of Thomson's long-rumored appointment to CEO of the publishing company appears to have sidelined any plans Murdoch may have had to bring his eldest son, Lachlan, back into the family business fold. News Corp watchers and industry experts had assumed that Murdoch would push hard to recruit Lachlan given his son previously had some success as publisher of the New York Post.

The Australian-born Thomson was appointed to oversee the newsroom of the Journal and Dow Jones Newswires shortly after News Corp's $5.6 billion acquisition of Dow Jones from the Bancroft family in 2007. Thomson was editor of News Corp's Times of London and before that he was at the Financial Times where he led that paper's expansion in the U.S.

He recruited Baker in 2008 from the Times of London where he was heading up its coverage in the U.S.

While the newspaper industry is facing stiff challenges, News Corp has invested in the Wall Street Journal, adding new sections - including one that covers New York and one that focuses on real estate, while other papers have retrenched by slashing pages and frequency of publication. The Journal has risen to become the No. 1 daily newspaper in the U.S. and has broadened out its coverage beyond Wall Street to include more political and general news in an effort to compete with the New York Times.

The splitting of News Corp into two publicly traded companies will likely be completed by the end of June.

New Corp's film and television businesses include the 20th Century Fox film studio, Fox broadcasting network and Fox News channel. The entertainment business, which generated revenues of $24.7 billion in the year ending June 2012, would dwarf the publishing unit, which posted $8.2 billion in revenue.

Fast cars go cheap as bubble pops in 'China's Dubai'

Two men walk down a deserted street in front of the unopened Ordos Museum on May 11, 2011. In the wake of a coal boom, Ordos was built to house up to 1 million people but only 30,000 live there today.

By Johanna Armstrong, NBC News

BEIJING -- With miles of freshly paved roads, little traffic and some seriously avant-garde architecture, the Chinese city of Ordos provides a driving environment most car enthusiasts can only dream of.

Yet rich Chinese who have invested in the resource-rich city?are now frantically rushing to sell off their new luxury toys to stem the excessive bleeding that has come with a steep decline in coal prices.

As the boom turns to bust, some luxury car owners are said to be asking for as little as 10 percent of the typical asking price.

Ordos, which sprung up from the deserts of ?Inner Mongolia, sits on a massive coal reserve. It?supplies about 17 percent of China?s needs.

When coal was discovered there in the early 1990s, farmers cashed in, selling their land at sky-high prices to private coal mining companies.

The boom sent hundreds of thousands of migrant workers flocking to Ordos.

However, the bubble burst in July. Coal prices dropped for 11 straight weeks, leading to rampant lay-offs and little or no profit for local coal companies.

Full China coverage on NBC News' Behind the Wall blog

One report suggested that 300,000 migrant workers who had traveled to Ordos to live and work had since left.

?Now that the economy is bad, many migrants have left,? lamented Li Rui, a cab driver in Ordos. ?It?s still busy downtown, but it?s nothing like Beijing.?

'Anxious to sell'
But those gaping numbers are not the ones that Chinese netizens are breathlessly talking about.

Fueled by a recent report in the Economic Observer,?the Internet exploded with rumors?that some car owners in Ordos were liquidating their assets for as much as 90 percent off the going rate.

On a popular Ordos-based car sales website, one seller listed a 2009 Porsche Cayman for $79,032. Another owner had listed a Hummer for $80,600 with the plea, ?anxious to sell.? In Beijing, a similar model Cayman would usually sell for $110,000, the Hummer for $121,000.

Zhou Hai, the manager of an Ordos-based dealership called Haohai Used Car Company, told NBC News that while prices have plummeted, it is not to the extent that people had claimed.

?The Internet is saying that my prices are 90 percent off, but in fact it?s only 50 percent,? he said.

Chinese paper falls for Onion 'sexiest man alive' spoof

Zhou noted that he had a used 2010 Range Rover selling for $160,000, compared to the average price of $207,000 in other parts of China.

Cars imported to China typically are taxed extensively, sometimes raising the retail price to as much as three times the usual U.S. price.

'Nail house' holds up traffic as homeowners fight local government

Ordos was supposed to be China?s Dubai, but the city built for 1 million people today has only 30,000 residents.

Investors across China have snatched up real estate ? often with no intention to move in or rent out ? in remote places like Ordos as a safe place to keep and grow their money.

China?s stock market is too unpredictable, bank interest rates in China are too low and strict government-mandated limitations on how Chinese can invest their money have encouraged many people to put their money into real estate.

'Ghost cities'
This phenomenon has contributed to what many experts believe to be a serious housing bubble and the rise of an increasing number of what have become known in China as ?ghost cities.?

Speaking to NBC News earlier this year, Gillem Tulloch, managing director of research firm Forensic Asia described the confluence of these economic events for ghost cities like Ordos as being: ?Empty roads, empty buildings, empty neighborhoods, empty cities -- all over China.?

The ghosts that haunt China's economic landscape

Meamwhile, a report from Ordos? municipal government noted that at the end of April only 40 percent of Ordos' 324 residential construction projects were still under way. Of the 49 new projects, only seven were said to still be in progress.

According to Zhang Xiaofei of Ruili Real Estate in Ordos, 20 percent more people each month are trying to sell their homes in the city, and prices are as low as $320 per square meter, compared to the average suburban price of $800 per square meter.

NBC News? Yanzhou Liu contributed to this report.

Cave stalagmite tells tale of 13,000 winters

Scientists have found a stalagmite in an Oregon cave that tells the story of thousands of winters in the Pacific Northwest.

"Most other ways of estimating past climate, like tree-ring data, only tell us about summers, when plants are growing," Oxford University researcher Vasile Ersek said in a statement. But understanding ancient winters is also important for regions like western North America, where chilly conditions are critical for determining water resources.

For their study, Ersek and his colleagues examined a cave formation called a stalagmite that started forming 13,000 years ago in a cavern in what is now Oregon Caves National Monument. During the region's damp winters, water from the ground seeped through the cave's ceiling and trickled onto the floor, with the drips slowly forming the stalagmite over time.

The ratio of certain oxygen and carbon isotopes (atoms of the same element with a different number of neutrons) in these deposits provides information on ancient climate. The researchers' measurements of these chemical components showed that the Pacific Northwest of recent prehistory saw rapid shifts between dry and warm, and wet and cold periods, similar to the currently observed Pacific Decadal Oscillation (PDO) ? a pattern of climate variability that switches between negative and positive every couple of decades.

    1. Deadly cave may have inspired Hades myth

A giant cave that might have helped inspire myths about the ancient Greek underworld known as Hades was once the site of a catastrophic collapse, researchers say.

    4. First Sicilians didn't much care for seafood

In a positive, or warm, phase, the surface waters of the west Pacific become cool and part of the eastern ocean warms, while the opposite occurs during a negative, or cool, phase.

"Whilst we can't directly relate these changes to the Pacific Decadal Oscillation, the mechanisms involved do look similar," Ersek said in a statement from Oxford. "Getting a long-term perspective on these sorts of natural climate variations may help us to understand the potential for future loss of winter snow cover along the West Coast, as well as what's happening out in the Pacific to influence other cyclical climate events such as El Ni?o."

The cave's record keeping stopped before the industrial age began, the researchers said, so the stalagmite unfortunately does not offer clues about how human activities have influenced the winter climate.

The study was detailed this week in the journal Nature Communications.
