?The Rockland County elementary school teacher who drew outrage when she reportedly told a classroom of second-graders that Santa didn't exist is apologizing.

The New York Post reports Leatrice Ann Eng, 58, has been calling each of the students' parents to apologize for telling their children Santa Claus wasn't real.

Eng, a teacher at Nanuet's George W. Miller Elementary School, was holding a geography lesson last Tuesday when the 7-year-old students?said they knew about the North Pole because that's where Santa resided, LoHud.com reported.

She responded by telling them that Santa did not exist and that Christmas presents were bought by their parents.

School officials didn't immediately respond to questions about the matter, but the incident made national headlines and sparked heated discussion over the teacher's place in breaking a popular childhood fantasy.

"It's sad; she was wrong," Irene Hoffman, a mother of three students at the school, told the New York Post. "The whole thing is being blown out of proportion. I think we should focus on our children's education, and just move on."?

Russian President Dmitry Medvedev raised the prospect of criminal prosecution for space mishaps on Saturday following a series of failed launches that have embarrassed Russia.

Earlier this month, a probe designed to bring back soil samples from the Mars moon Phobos got stuck in Earth's orbit, leaving Russia's first interplanetary mission in years with almost no chance of success.

The probe failure came less than three months after a cargo ship carrying food and fuel to the International Space Station burned up in the atmosphere shortly after launch.

"Recent failures are a strong blow to our competitiveness. It does not mean that something fatal has happened, it means that we need to carry out a detailed review and punish those guilty," Medvedev told reporters in televised comments.

"I am not suggesting putting them up against the wall like under Josef Vissarionovich (Stalin), but seriously punish either financially or, if the fault is obvious, it could be a disciplinary or even criminal punishment," he said.

Medvedev has recently made similar calls for strict punishment after disasters blamed on carelessness, corruption and problems with Russia's rusty infrastructure, such as a riverboat sinking in July that killed 122.

Second Mile charity to freeze assets following lawsuit (Reuters)

STATE COLLEGE, Pa (Reuters) ? The Second Mile charity has agreed to freeze its assets to settle a lawsuit filed by a man identified only as Victim 4 in a sexual abuse indictment against a former Penn State football coach, the man's lawyers said on Friday.

The Second Mile charity to help troubled children was founded by assistant coach Jerry Sandusky, who is charged with molesting eight men when they were juveniles in a scandal that rocked the multimillion dollar world of college athletics.

The man identified as Victim 4 in a grand jury report filed the lawsuit last month in state court in Philadelphia to preserve Second Mile's assets. His lawyers, Ben Andreozzi and Jeffrey Fritz, said the charity has settled that suit.

They also said in a statement that the man planned to eventually file another lawsuit seeking damages "from the organizations and individuals responsible for the sexual assaults upon our clients."

Those clients include other accusers who have contacted the lawyers since the grand jury indicted Sandusky, a spokeswoman for the law firm said, declining further comment.

The Second Mile charity, through which Sandusky allegedly met his victims, has said it was considering three options for its future, one of which was closing. It has told potential donors to give to another charity.

In settling the lawsuit, the Second Mile agreed to obtain court approval prior to the transfer of assets or closure, and to provide notice to the man. It also agreed to allow the man "to be heard by the court regarding the interest of victims and the distribution of assets."

The Second Mile said of the deal: "The agreement reiterates the Second Mile's existing legal obligations; it does not include a finding of liability."

Separately, an attorney for another accuser rejected comments by Sandusky's lawyer, Joe Amendola, this week that Sandusky was innocent because some of his accusers had maintained relationships with him.

Amendola told the Harrisburg Patriot-News daily that Victims 2 and 6 of the grand jury report had dined with Sandusky and his wife in summer 2011.

REPORTED ON DETAILS OF DINNER

Howard Janet, a Baltimore lawyer who represents Victim 6, said the July dinner was initiated after Sandusky knew he was under investigation by a grand jury.

Victim 6 also told police about the invitation. He declined a request to wear an electronic listening device but reported details afterward to authorities, Janet said in a statement.

"Today, we call on Sandusky and his lawyer to stop the manipulation and mental abuse of these former Second Mile children and Penn State devotees so that this matter may be resolved quickly and the healing may get underway," he said.

Penn State's Board of Trustees also formally dismissed legendary football coach Joe Paterno and President Graham Spanier, finalizing actions taken last month after Sandusky's indictment on 40 criminal counts.

The brief meeting of trustees made official the November 9 firings of Spanier and Paterno in the scandal. Paterno was head coach of the Nittany Lions, a college football powerhouse, for 46 years.

"I think today we wanted to make sure we crossed our 't's and dotted our 'i's," university spokesman Bill Mahon said.

Sandusky, a former defensive coordinator, was accused of sexually assaulting young boys over a 15-year period. If convicted, he faces life in prison. He has maintained his innocence.

A ninth accuser came forward this week to file a lawsuit against Sandusky, Penn State and The Second Mile.

The executive committee voted unanimously on the resolutions severing Paterno and Spanier from their positions, Mahon said. It also voted unanimously on a resolution to replace Spanier with Rodney Erickson.

Spokeswoman Lisa Powers declined to comment on such details of Paterno and Spanier's dismissals as access to university facilities and financial questions. She said they were either being discussed or subject to confidentiality clauses.

Paterno was the highest-paid employee at Penn State in 2009, making $1.02 million , according to a university federal filing this year. Spanier was the fifth-highest paid employee at $814,000.

Although technically fired, Spanier still holds a tenured position with the university. Mahon said he remains eligible to go on a one-year sabbatical and return to teach at Penn State following a hiatus.

Mahon could not say for certain if the same provision worked for Paterno.

KABUL, Afghanistan (AP) ? A suicide bomber blew up a truck full of explosives outside a joint Afghan-NATO combat outpost in eastern Afghanistan on Friday morning, killing one Afghan civilian and wounding five other people, officials said.

The bomber tried to enter Combat Outpost McClain in Mohammad Agha district of Logar province, said Gen. Ghulam Saki Rooghlawanay, the provincial police chief.

When the bomber was not allowed onto the base, he drove his vehicle toward a group of buildings including government offices, a clinic and a youth center, and detonated it, Rooghlawanay said.

"It was a very powerful explosion," he said. "It was a semitrailer with explosives."

The police chief said an Afghan businessman was killed. Three Afghan soldiers and two Afghan intelligence employees were wounded by shrapnel.

NATO confirmed that an explosion occurred near the entrance to the base, but that the truck never penetrated security protecting the installation. No NATO service members were injured or killed in the attack.

The province's governor Atiqullah Ludin inspected the site of the explosion, which was littered with parts of the truck and debris from the damaged building.

"There were no students in the youth center," he said. "We were very lucky. It is Friday," which is part of the Afghan weekend.

'Little Mole' Czech cartoonist Miler dies at 90 (AP)

PRAGUE ? In the 1950s, Zdenek Miler stumbled over a molehill in woods west of Prague, giving him the idea for an animated cartoon character that has enchanted millions of children around the world and even made it into space on a NASA shuttle.

Miler, creator of the Little Mole character, died Wednesday. He was 90 and spent the last months of his life at a nursing home in Nova Ves pod Plesi, southwest of Prague.

Born Feb 21, 1921 in the town of Kladno, he graduated from the Academy of Arts, Architecture and Design in Prague. He illustrated a number of children books and made several cartoons, but his most famous creation was the mole.

He created the character, which is always cheerful and ready to help those in need, in 1956 after walking in woods near Kladno and tripping over a molehill.

"So, I said to myself: that's it. The mole," Miler said in a 2006 interview with Czech public radio.

The very first episode titled "How the Mole got his Trousers," was an immediate hit, winning the Silver Lion award at the Venice Film Festival in Italy. Since then, 50 episodes have been made, attracting a wide audience among children in Eastern Europe and countries such as Germany, Austria, China and India.

A stuffed toy of Little Mole, known as "krtek" in Czech (pronounced KRRR-tech), returned to Earth in July after a voyage to outer space on NASA's shuttle Endeavour. The toy accompanied American astronaut Andrew Feustel on NASA's last shuttle mission. Feustel's wife, Indira, is of Czech origin.

"Krtek spent a lot of time floating around the international space station," Feustel commented during his visit to Prague. Miler said in a letter to Feustel he was honored.

Miler was looking for a new creature for a new film in the 1950s that would not be used by anyone else.

"Walt Disney used for his cartoons almost all animals, but one," Miler said. "That was chosen by me."

The mole doesn't speak and uses just nonverbal exclamations to express his feelings, a strategy that resonates well with an international audience. More than 5 million copies of books with the mole adventures, translated into 20 languages, have been sold worldwide as well as numerous mole toys.

Miller personally signed off on all designs based on the mole until he died.

"He never disappointed me," Miler said about the mole. "He made me happy all my life."
